Job Title: Full-Time Contract Phlebotomist
Location: Lake Geneva, Wisconsin
Facility: Mercyhealth Hospital and Medical Center – Walworth
Job Type: 13-Week Contract
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week
Start Date: ASAP

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Phlebotomist to join a busy hospital laboratory team in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This full-time contract opportunity is ideal for candidates who are experienced in specimen collection, patient registration, laboratory support, and delivering exceptional patient care in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform accurate venipuncture and capillary specimen collection for patients of all ages.

  • Verify patient identity using established patient identification protocols.

  • Label, process, accession, centrifuge, aliquot, and prepare specimens for testing or transport.

  • Utilize Hospital Information Systems (HIS), Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), and EPIC EMR for order processing, specimen tracking, and documentation.

  • Register patients and accurately enter demographic and insurance information.

  • Review laboratory orders, resolve discrepancies, and communicate with physicians, nurses, and reference laboratories when clarification is needed.

  • Collect specialized specimens including blood cultures, throat swabs, MRSA swabs, urine specimens, finger sticks, heel sticks, and other laboratory collections as required.

  • Perform glucose tolerance testing, hormone stimulation testing, research collections, and other timed specimen collections.

  • Provide patient education regarding specimen collection procedures.

  • Handle specimen packaging and transportation while maintaining specimen integrity.

  • Notify laboratory personnel of STAT collections and maintain compliance with laboratory turnaround times.

  • Perform limited waived testing in accordance with established laboratory procedures.

  • Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and assist with stocking and ordering.

  • Follow infection prevention, safety, and quality assurance standards.

  • Assist with training and mentoring new laboratory staff as assigned.

  • Support departmental operations and participate in process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program preferred.

  • Previous phlebotomy experience required.

  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.

  • Experience working in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting is highly desirable.

  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic medical records, preferably EPIC.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the healthcare team.
