To thrive as a Phlebotomist, you need a solid understanding of venipuncture techniques, infection control, and specimen handling, usually supported by a phlebotomy certification or completion of an accredited training program. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), blood collection equipment, and proper labeling procedures is essential. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and a calm, reassuring demeanor help build patient trust and minimize discomfort. These skills ensure accurate specimen collection, patient safety, and efficient workflow in clinical and laboratory environments.

AspectPhlebotomist In

Phlebotomist In and Phlebotomist share similar roles, focusing on drawing blood for tests, donations, or research. Both typically require certification, work in healthcare settings like hospitals, clinics, or labs, and are employed within the healthcare industry. The main difference is that "Phlebotomist In" often refers to a specific position or department within a healthcare facility, emphasizing the internal or in-house nature of the role, whereas "Phlebotomist" is a broader term for anyone performing blood draws. Overall, their duties, credentials, and work environments are very similar, with the key distinction being the context of employment.

What are some common challenges a phlebotomist in might encounter when drawing blood from patients, and how are these typically handled?

Phlebotomists often face challenges such as locating difficult veins, working with anxious or fearful patients, and maintaining strict infection control standards. To address these, phlebotomists use a combination of technical skill, patient communication, and adherence to safety protocols. Building rapport with patients and explaining procedures can help ease anxiety, while ongoing training and practice improve vein location and puncture techniques. Collaboration with nursing staff and supervisors is also essential for managing difficult cases or special patient needs.

What is a phlebotomist in?

Phlebotomists are healthcare professionals who are trained to draw blood from patients for medical testing, transfusions, donations, or research. They typically work in hospitals, clinics, diagnostic laboratories, and blood donation centers. In addition to collecting blood samples, phlebotomists may also label specimens, maintain patient records, and ensure proper sanitation and safety during procedures. Their role is vital for accurate laboratory results and patient care.

Job description

Overview
We can't do it without YOU!
Do you want to apply your experience, skills and education in a way that makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of our patients and their families? At Tennessee Cancer Specialists, it is the privilege of our employees to walk with our patients and their families as they move along the journey of fighting cancer. Whether you are working directly with patients in one of our clinics or in a support role, you are an important part of our mission to deliver the highest quality, compassionate care. Our 300+ employees make up the teams at our 17 different East Tennessee locations!
As a Phlebotomist, you will work closely with our other lab staff to perform phlebotomy and collect appropriate samples from our patients who are either being seen by one of our providers and/or will be receiving outpatient infusion treatment.
Responsibilities
Here's what might happen on a typical day...
You are in a very unique position as a phlebotomist with Tennessee Cancer Specialists. You will come in contact with most of the patients that come into our clinic. Whether the patient is being seen by one of our providers or is receiving treatment, the patient's labs provide our other clinical staff members with the information needed to make informed decisions on their treatment plans.
Your compassion toward our patients helps put the patient at ease during this part of their experience within our clinic. Due to the nature of this specialty, you likely realize that certain patients are harder to perform phlebotomy on than others. Because of your experience and that fact that you know when to ask for help, this won't be an issue for you though!
Experiences that matter...
  • Your experience as a phlebotomist allows you to carefully and efficiently collect specimens from patients as ordered and follow quality and safety procedures for processing those specimens.
  • In conversations with patients, coworkers and third-party laboratories, you communicate respectfully and thoroughly listen to any shared details.
  • Experience with navigating Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and lab management systems will allow you to quickly adapt to the workflow of this position.
  • You will use your organization skills to properly log and maintain inventory while following all OSHA compliance laws and Universal Precaution procedures. You understand the importance of neatly labeling all specimens to prevent any specimen processing errors.
  • Your go-getter work ethic will have you ready to jump in and help out with any additional tasks.

Qualifications
For your safety, keep this in mind:
  • This position can require standing or sitting for extended periods of time depending on the function of the position being completed.
  • Any lifting should be limited to 40 pounds or less.
  • You will need manual dexterity, proper hand-eye coordination, clear color perception and corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

We feel this position requires these basics:
  • While not required, a certificate from an accredited school of phlebotomy is highly preferred. However, a high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Entry level phlebotomists are required to have around 0-3 years of experience; a senior level phlebotomist will have 5 or more years of experience.
