Department Summary
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon, serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50+ departments and programs in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. Our faculty and advisors work closely with students to develop critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and clear communication skills to address real-world challenges. The German and Scandinavian Department focuses on modernity in German language contexts (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), and on Scandinavian cultures from medieval to modern. Our various sub-concentrations represent substantive links to other departments and programs, in particular Philosophy, History, Judaic Studies, Art History, Music, English, Comparative Literature, Folklore, and Cinema Studies. Areas of study include literary history (lyric, drama, narrative), philosophical and theoretical discourses (19th and 20th century German philosophy, literature theory, psychoanalysis, Frankfurt School cultural theory, poststructuralism, and contemporary European thought), Holocaust and memory studies, Environmental Humanities, film and media, visual culture, and folk traditions.
Position Summary
The German and Scandinavian Department at the University of Oregon seeks to establish a pool of qualified candidates interested in Pro Tem Instructor positions. Depending on departmental needs and candidate qualifications, Pro Tem Instructors may teach undergraduate courses in German language and culture. Instructors are expected to provide high-quality instruction, maintain regular communication with students, and contribute to an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Positions are limited duration appointments potentially renewable for up to a total of three years, based on programmatic need, funding, and performance. Screening of applications will take place as positions become available and continue until positions are filled.
Minimum Requirements
• Fluency in German.
• Master's degree in German or related field.
• One (1) year post-secondary instructional experience.

• Ability to contribute to institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
