What is a PhD in Vision Science?

A PhD in Vision Science is an advanced research degree focused on the study of visual systems, including how vision works and how visual disorders are diagnosed and treated. Students in these programs explore topics such as ocular anatomy, visual perception, neuroscience, and eye diseases. Graduates often pursue careers in academia, clinical research, optometry, or the development of new vision technologies. The program typically involves both coursework and original research leading to a dissertation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD in Vision Science?

To thrive as a PhD in Vision Science, you need advanced knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology, optics, research methodology, and often experience in clinical or laboratory settings. Proficiency with data analysis tools (such as MATLAB or Python), imaging systems, and scientific publishing platforms is typically required. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills distinguish successful professionals in this field. These skills are essential for conducting high-quality research, driving innovation, and effectively sharing findings with both scientific and clinical communities.

What are some typical research collaborations for someone in a PhD Vision Science role?

PhD Vision Science professionals often work closely with interdisciplinary teams that include optometrists, ophthalmologists, neuroscientists, and engineers. Collaborations frequently involve designing and conducting experiments, sharing data, and co-authoring publications to advance understanding of visual processes and eye diseases. These partnerships can extend to industry settings—such as developing vision correction technologies or diagnostic tools—offering diverse opportunities to broaden your research impact and professional network.

What is the difference between Phd Vision Science vs Optometrist?

AspectPhd Vision ScienceOptometrist
Required CredentialsPhD in Vision Science or related fieldDoctor of Optometry (OD) license
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academia, industryClinical settings, private practices, clinics
Industry UsageResearch, product development, academiaPatient eye care, vision testing, prescriptions

While both roles focus on vision, a Phd Vision Science primarily involves research and development in vision-related fields, whereas an Optometrist provides clinical eye care and prescriptions. The PhD is research-oriented, often in labs or academia, while optometrists work directly with patients in clinical settings.

What can I do with a Phd vision science degree?

A PhD in vision science prepares individuals for research, academia, and advanced roles in vision-related industries such as ophthalmology, optometry, and biomedical device development. Graduates often work as university professors, research scientists, or in industry roles involving vision technology, requiring skills in data analysis, experimental design, and scientific communication.

Job description

The Company

Dexcom Corporation (NASDAQ DXCM) is a pioneer and global leader in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Dexcom began as a small company with a big dream: To forever change how diabetes is managed. To unlock information and insights that drive better health outcomes. Here we are 25 years later, having pioneered an industry. And we're just getting started. We are broadening our vision beyond diabetes to empower people to take control of health. That means personalized, actionable insights aimed at solving important health challenges. To continue what we've started: Improving human health.

Meet The Team

Welcome to Dexcom’s Behavioral Science team — a multidisciplinary group applying behavioral science, qualitative research, and data-driven insights to shape product strategy, clinical evidence, and patient-centered innovation. Within Behavioral Science, the Rapid Evidence and Translation (REAT) synthesizes published evidence to support strategic and commercial decision‑making and translates insights into decision‑ready outputs for product and service functions across the organization.

We are seeking a PhD-level Data Scientist with deep behavioral science expertise to join the Behavioral Science team. This role will sit at the intersection of behavioral research, evidence synthesis, data analytics, and cross-functional business strategy. The ideal candidate will help synthesize and translate behavioral and psychosocial evidence into actionable insights that inform product development, clinical strategy, claims generation, customer education, and broader organizational decision-making. This individual will conduct rapid evidence reviews to answer priority business questions, partner with BeSci data teams to translate behavioral insights into measurable outcomes and support the development of evidence-based claims. This is a highly cross-functional role requiring scientific rigor, strong analytical thinking, excellent communication skills, and the ability to convert complex behavioral science concepts into clear, practical recommendations for internal stakeholders.

Where You Come In
  • Evidence Reviews and Strategic Insight Generation: Lead and support rapid evidence reviews to answer high-priority business questions. Synthesize published literature, real-world evidence, internal research findings, and behavioral science frameworks into clear, business-relevant insights. Translate complex behavioral, psychosocial, and clinical evidence into practical recommendations for cross-functional stakeholders. Identify evidence gaps and recommend opportunities for future research, analysis, or claims development
  • Behavioral Data Science and Analytics Translation: Work closely with Behavioral Science data teams to translate behavioral insights into measurable data strategies. Support the development of behavioral metrics, taxonomies, and analytic frameworks that help characterize user engagement, behavior change, product experience, and psychosocial outcomes. Help define meaningful behavioral outcomes and data signals that can be used across cross-functional initiatives. Contribute to the development of dashboards, insight repositories, and internal tools that make behavioral evidence more accessible and actionable.
  • Claims and Evidence Translation: Support the generation of evidence-based claims related to behavioral outcomes, psychosocial value, user engagement, self-management, confidence, satisfaction, and behavior change. Evaluate the strength of available evidence and help determine whether findings are suitable for internal positioning, external communication, or formal claims development.
What Makes You Successful
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, rapid evidence reviews, systematic or targeted evidence syntheses, or evidence-based strategy work.
  • Strong understanding of behavioral science theories, behavior change frameworks, psychosocial outcomes, and patient/user experience research.
  • Experience working with quantitative and/or mixed-methods data, including survey data, patient-reported outcomes, real-world data, product engagement data, or behavioral analytics.
  • Ability to translate scientific evidence into actionable recommendations for business, product, clinical, or commercial stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing presentations, reports, or executive-facing summaries.
What You’ll Get
  • A front row seat to life changing CGM technology. Learn about our brave #dexcomwarriors community.
  • A full and comprehensive benefits program.
  • Growth opportunities on a global scale.
  • Access to career development through in-house learning programs and/or qualified tuition reimbursement.
  • An exciting and innovative, industry-leading organization committed to our employees, customers, and the communities we serve.
Travel Required
  • 5-15%
Experience And Education Requirements
  • Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 8 – 12 years of related experience or Master’s degree and 5 – 7 years of equivalent industry experience or a PhD and 2 – 4 years of experience.

Your primary location will be a home office. You will not have an assigned workstation and will work with your manager to determine office visit needs. You must live within commuting distance of your assigned Dexcom site (typically 75 miles/120km).
