Sommaire du poste

Nous recherchons un etudiant au doctorat motive, possedant un fort interet et une experience pratique en implementation materielle, plateformes experimentales et prototypage au niveau systeme. Le poste est base a Polytechnique Montreal et sera supervise par la Pre Gunes Karabulut Kurt. Il convient a un candidat souhaitant mener des recherches alliant analyse theorique, simulation et mise en uvre pratique.

L'axe principal du poste est la conception, l'implementation, le test et la validation de systemes experimentaux bases sur le materiel. Les travaux pourront impliquer des plateformes telles que les radios logicielles, les cartes FPGA, les systemes embarques, les composants RF et les equipements de mesure en laboratoire. Une experience avec les systemes sans fil, les plateformes SDR telles que USRP, la programmation FPGA ou l'implementation de reseaux 5G prives constitue un atout, sans toutefois se limiter a ces domaines.

Environnement de recherche

Le candidat retenu rejoindra le Centre de recherche Poly-Grames de Polytechnique Montreal, l'un des principaux centres de recherche en RF et communications sans fil au Canada. Les etudiants beneficient d'equipements de pointe, notamment des plateformes SDR/USRP, des cartes FPGA, des chambres anechoiques et des instruments sub-THz, ainsi que d'un soutien technique dedie et d'un environnement de recherche collaboratif et connecte a l'international.

Ce poste implique egalement une collaboration industrielle active avec LATYS Intelligence ( Building Intelligent Networks ), une startup deep-tech montrealaise specialisee dans les surfaces intelligentes reconfigurables (RIS) et les infrastructures sans fil intelligentes de nouvelle generation. LATYS developpe une technologie RIS non reciproque avancee permettant des reseaux sans fil ultra-fiables et spectralement efficaces pour des environnements exigeants, notamment l'IoT industriel, la 5G et les communications souterraines. L'etudiant au doctorat aura l'opportunite de travailler a l'interface de la recherche academique et de l'application industrielle, en contribuant a la transposition des resultats experimentaux vers des systemes sans fil reels.

Principales responsabilites

  • Mener des recherches de niveau doctoral avec un fort accent sur l'implementation materielle et la validation experimentale.
  • Concevoir, developper et tester des plateformes et prototypes experimentaux orientes materiel.
  • Assurer l'integration materielle/logicielle, la configuration des systemes, le debogage et l'evaluation des performances.
  • Utiliser des outils de programmation, de scripting ou de conception materielle pour l'implementation et les tests.
  • Analyser les resultats experimentaux et les relier aux objectifs de recherche, aux simulations et aux modeles theoriques.
  • Documenter les travaux techniques et contribuer aux publications scientifiques, rapports et livrables de projet.
  • Collaborer avec des partenaires academiques et industriels sur des activites de recherche experimentale.

Competences et qualifications

  • Solide experience pratique avec des plateformes materielles, des systemes experimentaux ou des implementations en laboratoire.
  • Experience dans au moins un domaine parmi : FPGA, SDR, systemes embarques, systemes RF, traitement numerique du signal, systemes temps reel ou integration materielle/logicielle.

PhD Student Position for Hardware-Oriented Experimental Systems (Montreal, Quebec)

Job Summary

We are looking for a motivated PhD student with a strong interest and hands-on experience in hardware implementation, experimental platforms, and system-level prototyping. The position is based at Polytechnique Montreal and will be supervised by Prof. Gunes Karabulut Kurt. The position is suitable for a candidate who is interested in research that combines theoretical analysis, simulation, and practical implementation.

The main focus of the position is to design, implement, test, and validate hardware-based experimental systems. The work may involve platforms such as software-defined radios, FPGA boards, embedded systems, RF components, and laboratory measurement equipment. Experience with wireless systems, SDR platforms such as USRP, FPGA programming, or private 5G implementation is considered an asset, but the position is not limited to these areas.

Research Environment

The successful candidate will join the Poly-Grames Research Centre at Polytechnique Montreal, one of Canada's premier RF and wireless communications research facilities. Students benefit from top-of-the-line equipment, including SDR/USRP platforms, FPGA boards, anechoic chambers, and sub-THz instrumentation, as well as dedicated technical support and a collaborative, internationally connected research environment.

This position also involves active industry collaboration with LATYS Intelligence ("Building Intelligent Networks"), a Montreal-based deep-tech startup specializing in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) and next-generation smart wireless infrastructure. LATYS develops advanced non-reciprocal RIS technology enabling ultra-reliable, spectrally efficient wireless networks for demanding environments, including industrial IoT, 5G, and underground communications. The PhD student will have the opportunity to work at the interface of academic research and industrial application, contributing to the translation of experimental results into real-world wireless systems.
