What is a PhD in science?

A PhD in Science is the highest academic degree awarded in scientific fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, or environmental science. It typically involves several years of advanced coursework, followed by original research that contributes new knowledge to the field. Graduates must defend a dissertation before a panel of experts. Earning a PhD in Science prepares individuals for careers in academia, research, industry, and leadership roles within scientific organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD scientist?

To thrive as a PhD Scientist, you need advanced expertise in your scientific discipline, strong research skills, and a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field. Familiarity with specialized laboratory equipment, data analysis software (such as R or Python), and publication processes is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for presenting complex findings and collaborating with peers. These skills and qualifications are crucial for driving innovative research, producing publishable results, and contributing to scientific advancement.

What are the typical career advancement paths for someone with a PhD in science in academia and industry?

Individuals with a PhD in Science often start in postdoctoral or entry-level research positions, where they build specialized expertise and publish their findings. In academia, advancement typically involves progressing to assistant, associate, and full professor roles, with additional opportunities to lead research groups or departments. In industry, PhD holders can move into senior scientist, project manager, or R&D director roles, with the potential to transition into leadership, policy, or consulting positions. Building a strong professional network, publishing impactful research, and developing leadership skills are key to advancing in both sectors.

What is the difference between Phd Science vs Data Scientist?

AspectPhd ScienceData Scientist
Required CredentialsPhD in a scientific field, research experienceBachelor's or Master's in CS, stats, or related field; often a PhD preferred
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, academia, industry R&DTech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting
Industry UsageResearch roles, scientific analysis, product developmentData analysis, machine learning, predictive modeling

While both roles involve analytical skills and data handling, Phd Science focuses on scientific research and experimentation, often in academic or R&D settings. Data Scientists primarily analyze large datasets to inform business decisions and develop models in industry environments. The key difference lies in their application areas and typical work environments.

Is a PhD worth it in science?

A PhD in science is valuable for careers in research, academia, and specialized industry roles that require advanced expertise and critical thinking skills. However, it often involves several years of study and research, and job prospects can vary depending on the field and geographic location. The decision to pursue a PhD should consider personal career goals and the demand for advanced scientific skills in the job market.

What can a PhD in science get you?

A PhD in science can lead to careers in research, academia, industry, or government, often involving roles such as scientist, researcher, or professor. It demonstrates advanced expertise and critical thinking skills, and may require additional certifications or experience depending on the field and position.

What is the salary of a PhD scientist?

The salary of a PhD scientist varies depending on the industry, experience, and location, but typically ranges from $70,000 to over $120,000 annually. Advanced skills, research experience, and specialized knowledge can lead to higher compensation, especially in biotech, pharmaceuticals, or research institutions.

What jobs can I do with a PhD in science?

A PhD in science qualifies individuals for research scientist, university professor, laboratory manager, or scientific consultant roles. These positions often require strong analytical skills, familiarity with laboratory tools, and the ability to conduct independent research or teach at higher education institutions.

Job description

Position Summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Systems Pharmacology AI Research Center (SPARC), is in search of a Scientist II to join their team. This role is designed for an early-career researcher who recently completed (preferably within the last 10 years) a PhD in biomedical informatics, computing, data science, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. The selected candidate will develop novel AI models and software systems that form essential components of SPARC's AI-accelerated drug discovery pipeline, conduct in silico computational research, and partner with experimental collaborators in a lab-in-the-loop mode with UAB, regional, and national groups. The Scientist II is expected to contribute meaningfully to obtaining AI drug discovery research funding as a Co-Investigator on grant proposals, to perform SPARC service activities not covered by existing external funding, and to author scientific manuscripts and progress reports. Active research areas include protein and antibody design, novel AI approaches to molecular dynamics simulations, agentic AI and autonomous systems for science, clinical trial simulations, virtual cell modeling, multi-modal drug discovery, retrosynthesis, and AI for science more broadly. SPARC offers a collaborative, computationally rich environment with GPU/HPC infrastructure, large biomedical data assets, and tight partnerships across the UAB School of Medicine. To fully appreciate the scope of this Scientist II position, it is essential to underscore SPARC's expectation that the incumbent will develop novel AI models and software systems that become essential components of the center's AI-accelerated drug discovery pipeline, perform genuine in silico research, and partner with experimental and clinical collaborators in a lab-in-the-loop mode with UAB, regional, and national groups. The Scientist II is also expected to contribute as a Co-Investigator to extramural grant proposals that obtain AI drug discovery research funding, to perform SPARC service work not covered by existing external funding, to author scientific manuscripts and progress reports, and to develop active research collaborations. Excellent office, programming, and written/verbal communication skills are essential.

General Responsibilities

  • To employ a broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures in a particular field of specialization.

  • To plan, design and conduct research and present findings.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Develop Novel AI Models and Software Systems for the AI-Accelerated Drug Discovery Pipeline: Design, implement, benchmark, and ship novel AI/ML models and reusable software components that become essential building blocks of SPARC's AI-accelerated drug discovery pipeline spanning protein/antibody design, AI for molecular dynamics, virtual cell modeling, multi-modal drug discovery, retrosynthesis, agentic AI, and clinical trial simulation.

  2. Perform In Silico and Lab-in-the-Loop Research Studies: Conduct computational research studies and partner with experimental collaborators at UAB, regional, and national institutions in a lab-in-the-loop mode, iterating between AI predictions and wet-lab or clinical validation to accelerate scientific discovery.

  3. Obtain Research Funding as Co-Investigator on AI Drug Discovery Grants: Contribute substantively to extramural grant proposals (NIH, NSF, DOD, foundation, and industry) as a Co-Investigator, drafting aims, preliminary data, computational specifications, and budget components to secure AI drug discovery research funding for SPARC.

  4. Provide SPARC Center Service Not Covered by External Funding: Perform technical, infrastructure, and project-support service activities for SPARC initiatives that are not already covered by external funding, including shared codebases, model registries, GPU/HPC workflows, reproducibility tooling, and internal pilot studies.

  5. Author Scientific Manuscripts and Progress Reports: Draft and submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed venues; prepare progress reports for sponsors and internal SPARC leadership; contribute to grant-renewal documentation and conference presentations.

  6. Develop Active Research Collaborations Across UAB and Beyond: Initiate and sustain active research collaborations with UAB faculty, regional research institutions, and national academic and industry partners. Represent SPARC at scientific meetings and joint working sessions.

  7. Mentor and Train Junior Researchers: Mentor undergraduate students, graduate trainees, and post-doctoral fellows in modern AI methods, computational reproducibility, and scientific communication.

  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:   $ 74,100- $ 120,700

Qualifications
