Phd Material Science information
What is the difference between Phd Material Science vs Materials Engineer?
| Aspect | Phd Material Science | Materials Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | PhD in Material Science or related field | Bachelor's or Master's in Materials Engineering or related field |
| Work Environment | Research labs, academia, R&D departments | Manufacturing, product development, industry labs |
| Industry Usage | Research, academia, advanced R&D | Product design, process improvement, manufacturing |
Phd Material Science professionals focus on advanced research, developing new materials, and academic roles, often working in labs or universities. Materials Engineers typically work in industry settings, applying existing knowledge to develop and improve products and manufacturing processes. While both roles require knowledge of materials, the PhD is more research-oriented, whereas Materials Engineers focus on practical application and product development.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oregon (chemistry.uoregon.edu) invites applications for a tenured faculty position in electrochemistry/materials chemistry, broadly defined.
We seek a colleague to lead a vigorous research program and participate with faculty and staff in the Oregon Center for Electrochemistry (OCE, https://electrochemistry.uoregon.edu/). The OCE is a hub for fundamental and applied electrochemistry research and hosts the Electrochemistry Masters Internship Program as well as unique training for PhD students. In addition, the University of Oregon advanced materials characterization (https://camcor.uoregon.edu/) and Materials Science Institute (https://materialscience.uoregon.edu/) provide substantial support and an intellectual nexus for interdisciplinary materials research at the University of Oregon. We seek candidates with leadership experience to expand collaborative research projects between universities, national laboratories, and industry partners, and a demonstrated commitment to mentoring and innovative scientific training.
The UO Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers undergraduate major and minor degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and graduate degrees at the masters and PhD level.
Our department is committed to creating and sustaining an open, inclusive, and supportive community that values the individuality and diversity of all its members. Our faculty, staff and students have worked to develop a set of shared values that provides a framework for informing our actions and decision-making, helps us hold ourselves accountable, and gives us common ground to start a conversation when challenges arise.
Applicants must have a PhD in Chemistry or a related discipline in addition to:
Evidence of successful mentoring of trainees at any level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate, postdoctoral, peers).
Record of research excellence appropriate to career stage, such as peer-reviewed publications and extramural funding.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of belonging, as evidenced through research, teaching, mentoring, or service.
A nationally recognized track record of scientific achievement as evidenced by an outstanding publication record and other appropriate external indicators relevant to the individual's seniority in the field.
Experience working in complex, multi-stakeholder environments with the ability to build successfully at multiple interfaces (e.g., across colleges and departments, between universities and industry, etc.).
Demonstrated experience with large government agencies, foundations, industry, and philanthropy with a thorough understanding of funding opportunities and pathways, and strategies to successfully attract funding sufficient for the individual's research program and ambitions as relevant to the individual's seniority in the field.
Demonstrated commitment to translating research discoveries into societal impacts.
Demonstrated success in a pedagogical environment using evidence-based pedagogical methods.
Demonstrated service contributions and leadership in academia, research societies, government, and/or industry relevant to the individual's seniority in the field.
