Job description

Salary: Between $90,000 and $126,000 annually

Makivvik, the trusted political organization with a rich history of representing the Inuit of Nunavik since 1978. Through Makivvik and our subsidiaries, Makivvik has created opportunities for Nunavik Beneficiaries and those who live in Nunavik, and today more than 500 Nunavimmiut are employed within the Makivvik network in our offices and subsidiaries.


Reports to: The DEWRs Assistant Director in the Department of Environment, Wildlife and Research


Location: Kuujjuaq, Montral or Quebec

Responsibilities

  • Develop, analyze, and recommend strategic policy positions, briefing notes, and proposals on key environmental and wildlife issues, including climate change, biodiversity conservation, resource development, and protected areas;
  • Coordinate and lead the development of departmental strategies, management plans and research priorities in line with Makivviks strategic goals and the interests of Nunavik communities;
  • Act as Makivviks lead representative or technical advisor on various committees and working groups at a regional and National level;
  • Oversee and coordinate complex projects, ensuring they are executed effectively, on budget, and in a manner that integrates the views and interests of Nunavik Inuit;
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with representatives from Nunavik communities, regional organizations, the Qubec government, the Government of Canada, and other stakeholders;
  • Be available to travel, as requested;
  • Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in political science, social science or environmental science or any other relevant sectors;
  • A minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of demonstrated experience in senior policy analysis, intergovernmental negotiations, or regulatory affairs, preferably within an Indigenous, governmental, or land claim organization;
  • Effective communication skills in at least two (2) of the three (3) languages: Inuktitut, English and/or French;
  • Effective Computer skills: Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • A strong knowledge of Modern Comprehensive Land Claims Agreements, especially the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and the Nunavik Inuit Land Claims Agreement;
  • Written and oral proficiency in English and French. Proficiency in Inuktitut is also strongly encouraged;
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and time-management skills;
  • Working knowledge of relevant jurisprudence;
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team;
  • Exceptional analytical and strategic thinking abilities. Proven ability to manage multiple complex files concurrently;
  • Security clearance is required.
