What are some common collaborative opportunities for someone with a PhD in Neuroscience within academic and industry settings?

With a PhD in Neuroscience, you can expect to work closely with diverse teams, including biologists, psychologists, data scientists, and clinicians. In academia, collaboration often involves interdisciplinary research projects, grant writing, and co-authoring publications. In industry, you may partner with pharmacologists, engineers, or product development teams to advance neurotechnology or therapeutics. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as many projects require integrating expertise from multiple fields to tackle complex questions about the brain and nervous system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD in Neuroscience, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PhD in Neuroscience, you need a deep understanding of neurobiology, experimental design, and data analysis, typically supported by a doctoral degree in neuroscience or a related field. Experience with advanced laboratory techniques, neuroimaging software, and statistical programming tools like MATLAB or Python is highly valuable. Strong critical thinking, perseverance, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly set top candidates apart. These skills and qualities are essential for driving impactful research, publishing results, and collaborating effectively in multidisciplinary scientific environments.

What is a PhD in Neuroscience?

A PhD in Neuroscience is a doctoral degree focused on the scientific study of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and neural networks. Students in these programs conduct original research to understand how the nervous system works at molecular, cellular, and systemic levels. Graduates are trained to pursue careers in academia, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or healthcare. A PhD in Neuroscience typically requires several years of coursework, lab rotations, and the completion of a dissertation based on novel research.

Job description

Department Overview

The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics). The responsibilities are to conduct research exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission between neurons using electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. The candidate will be involved in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, circuit and live imaging approaches in the mammalian brain.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics) in the von Gersdorff lab in the Vollum Institute.

  • Planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, and live imaging and computational approaches in the retina and/or CNS.

  • Manuscript preparation for individual projects and assisting other lab members with manuscripts as needed.

  • Assisting the PI and other lab members with grant application (data acquisition, writing assistance, editing) as needed. Preparing fellowship applications.

  • Traveling to national and international meetings to present on findings.

  • Helping to mentor and train junior members of the laboratory.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in relevant field of study (Neuroscience and/or Biophysics or Computational Physics)
  • Direct experience in studies of neurons, synapses and/or brain circuits.
  • Knowledge and experience with computational and cellular techniques.
  • Experience with manuscript preparation and writing skills for individual projects and statistical analysis of data are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience in studies of neuronal imaging/morphology.
  • Imaging experience and work with live neurons and brain slices and analysis of patch clamp data.
