Job description

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis through May 2027. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas at this time.

The Department of English at the University of Memphis seeks candidates for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. The position is non-renewable and contingent upon funding. It begins Fall 2026 and ends with the conclusion of the Spring 2027 semester. We welcome applications from applied linguists who can contribute to our current foci in language teaching and learning, English language teacher education, critical pedagogy, language and cognition, and language assessment, among others.  

The successful candidate will contribute to the AL/TESOL curriculum and strengthen interdisciplinary and community ties with the local TESOL educators.

The department offers degrees in English with concentrations in TESOL at the undergraduate and Master's level and Applied Linguistics at the Undergraduate, Master's, and Doctoral level. Students may complete the M.A or PhD online. The Applied Linguistics Program also offers a 15-credit-hour graduate certificate program in TESOL, conducts a summer EFL institute in Pilsen, Czech Republic, and works closely with local school systems. The teaching load for this full-time position is 3/3. Salary is competitive and based on experience.

  • PhD in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or TESOL and/or related field (ABD will be considered). Ph.D. preferred by May 2026.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence 
  • Willingness to follow department-directed course objectives and outcomes. 
  • Evidence of initial scholarly achievement and a clearly articulated research agenda pertinent to TESOL/Applied Linguistics.
     

Special Conditions 

  • Special preference given to candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas: language assessment, phonetics/phonology, technology and language teaching, and to candidates with research and/or teaching experience in K-12 ESL settings.
  • Interest in writing grants, developing international programs, and conducting classroom-based research.
