While a Phd In Epidemiology focuses on advanced research, teaching, and policy development, an Epidemiologist typically conducts disease investigations and data analysis in public health settings. Both roles require a strong background in epidemiology, but the PhD prepares for higher-level research and academic positions, whereas epidemiologists work directly in disease control and prevention.

Are Phd in epidemiology in high demand?

PhD holders in epidemiology are in high demand in public health agencies, research institutions, and healthcare organizations, especially during health crises like pandemics. They often require strong analytical skills, knowledge of statistical tools, and experience with data modeling, making them valuable for disease surveillance, policy development, and research roles.

Is a PhD in epidemiology worth it?

A PhD in epidemiology prepares individuals for research, academia, and public health roles, often leading to higher-level positions and increased earning potential. However, it requires significant time, effort, and investment, and job opportunities may be competitive depending on the sector and geographic location.

What can you do with a PhD in epidemiology?

A PhD in epidemiology prepares individuals for research, teaching, and leadership roles in public health, academia, government agencies, and healthcare organizations. Job description

Overview

The Department of Epidemiology and Cancer Control at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is recruiting Faculty Members at the FULL, Associate or Assistant level as we expand our Department’s mission to conduct highly innovative clinical, biological, and population‑health sciences research, both observational and interventional studies. We aim to translate our findings into effective strategies to avert or mitigate cancer‑treatment‑related complications and improve the quality of life of childhood cancer survivors.

Our research employs state‑of‑the‑art approaches to assess adverse outcomes and design interventions to optimize health. The Department houses a diverse team with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, oncology, genetics, neuropsychology, exercise science, patient‑reported outcomes, and health behavior research. We actively collaborate across Cancer Center Programs, engaging with clinic‑ and laboratory‑based researchers to advance clinical care and knowledge on childhood cancer and associated late effects.

Key resources include the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study with over 38,000 survivors diagnosed from 1970‑1999 and the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort with over 6,000 clinically assessed survivors treated since 1962. These foundational studies are funded by the National Cancer Institute and provide comprehensive characterization of treatment exposures, genomic data, patient‑reported outcomes, and late‑effects outcomes.

Qualifications
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent degree.
  • At least three years of relevant post‑graduate experience.
  • Proven track record of productivity.
Application Process

Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae and a 2‑3 page summary of research interests directly online.
