Job description

Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Duration: 12 Months of Contract

Location: Jackson, Tennessee (Field-Based Role)

Job Summary

We are seeking an Environmental Scientist to support environmental monitoring and public water system activities within a multi-county service area. This role involves field sampling, sanitary surveys, environmental investigations, regulatory compliance support, and collaboration with public stakeholders and internal teams. The ideal candidate will have strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills along with the ability to work independently in field environments and varying weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect chemical, bacteriological, and biological surface water samples for environmental analysis and stream health assessments
  • Perform sanitary surveys of community and non-community public water systems to ensure compliance with drinking water regulations
  • Conduct fieldwork at rural locations, construction sites, and monitoring stations in varying environmental conditions
  • Maintain accurate field documentation, reports, and digital data records
  • Support investigations involving illegal discharges, water quality concerns, and public drinking water complaints
  • Communicate regulatory guidance and compliance information to water system operators, landowners, consultants, and stakeholders
  • Travel regularly throughout a multi-county service area using a provided vehicle
  • Collaborate with regulatory teams, local agencies, elected officials, and community representatives to support environmental initiatives
  • Follow laboratory procedures and sampling protocols for water quality analysis

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Wildlife Biology, or a related scientific field
  • Experience or academic background in environmental sampling, water quality monitoring, or laboratory procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams
  • Proficiency in data entry, recordkeeping, and digital reporting systems
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel frequently for field assignments
