What is a PhD data scientist?

PhD Data Scientists are professionals who have earned a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field, such as computer science, statistics, mathematics, or engineering, and work in roles focused on analyzing and interpreting complex data. They leverage advanced research skills, deep theoretical knowledge, and expertise in data modeling to solve challenging problems, build predictive models, and derive actionable insights for organizations. PhD Data Scientists often contribute to cutting-edge projects, publish research, and help bridge the gap between academic research and practical, real-world applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD data scientist?

To thrive as a PhD Data Scientist, you need advanced expertise in statistics, machine learning, and data analysis, typically backed by a PhD in a quantitative field. Proficiency with programming languages like Python or R, experience with big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark), and familiarity with cloud platforms and version control systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and the capacity to explain complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders are crucial soft skills. These skills and qualities are essential for extracting actionable insights from complex datasets and driving data-informed decision-making in organizations.

What are some common challenges PhD data scientists face when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

PhD Data Scientists often encounter challenges when moving from academia to industry, such as adapting to faster project timelines, prioritizing business impact over exploratory research, and communicating complex findings to non-technical stakeholders. In industry, there is a greater emphasis on collaborative teamwork and delivering actionable insights that align with organizational goals. Building skills in agile development, stakeholder engagement, and product-focused thinking can help smooth the transition and ensure success in a corporate environment.

Job description

Description
The Department of Ophthalmology/Flaum Eye Institute (FEI) at the University of Rochester invites applications for an open-rank, tenure-track faculty position. We welcome candidates with a broad interest in studying ocular structure and function in health and disease.
Primary appointment of the new faculty member will reside in the Department of Ophthalmology and Flaum Eye Institute, but there are ready opportunities for secondary appointments in the Center for Visual Science (a university-wide community of >55 faculty engaged in vision research), and other University of Rochester departments (e.g., the Institute of Optics, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, Microbiology and Immunology, Biomedical Genetics, etc.).
The faculty hire will have access to considerable shared resources, both within the department of Ophthalmology (shared confocal microscope, histology laboratory, ophthalmic imaging core, biostatistics) and within the Medical Center. The successful candidate will work with an active program of undergraduate and graduate students through multiple, highly-ranked, degree-granting academic programs across the University of Rochester.
Qualifications
All candidates should hold a PhD, MD, MD PhD or equivalent. An important expectation for this job position is demonstrated research productivity and the ability to attract extramural funding. Depending on qualifications, an appointment will be made at the assistant, associate or full professor level. Preferred candidates will have expertise in advanced physiological optics (e.g., adaptive optics imaging, optical coherence tomography, scanning laser ophthalmoscopy, two-photon imaging, fluorescence lifetime or other ocular imaging modalities) and/or expertise in advanced cellular and molecular biology, such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics and connectomics, as well as stem cell and organoid approaches for studying retinal physiology. Research areas may involve humans, animal models and/or in vitro systems, as well as computational approaches including machine learning and artificial intelligence.
The position will be open until filled, but the application review process will start on July 15th, 2026.
Application Instructions
Applications should be submitted on Interfolio (apply.interfolio.com/162715).
For questions, email Dr. Ruchira Singh (Ruchira_Singh@urmc.rochester.edu) or Dr. Krystel Huxlin (khuxlin@ur.rochester.edu).
