What is a PhD biophysicist?

PhD biophysicists are scientists who have earned a doctoral degree in biophysics, an interdisciplinary field that applies the principles of physics and mathematics to understand biological systems. They conduct advanced research to investigate the physical mechanisms underlying biological processes, such as protein folding, molecular interactions, or cellular dynamics. PhD biophysicists often work in academic institutions, research labs, pharmaceutical companies, or technology firms, contributing to advancements in medicine, biotechnology, and fundamental biology.

What are some common collaborative projects a PhD biophysicist might work on within a research institution?

PhD biophysicists frequently collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including biologists, chemists, and engineers, to tackle complex problems such as protein structure analysis, drug discovery, and the development of novel imaging techniques. These projects often require integrating experimental data with computational modeling, meaning effective communication and teamwork are essential. It's common to participate in joint grant applications, contribute to publications, and share findings at group meetings, which fosters both scientific growth and professional networking.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PhD biophysicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PhD Biophysicist, you need advanced knowledge of physics, biology, and chemistry, typically supported by a doctoral degree in biophysics or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory techniques, computational modeling tools, and data analysis software (such as MATLAB or Python) is essential. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are important soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting research findings. These skills are crucial for driving innovative research, interpreting complex biological systems, and contributing to advances in science and medicine.

Are Phd biophysicists in demand?

PhD biophysicists are in demand in research institutions, biotech companies, and pharmaceutical industries due to their expertise in applying physics principles to biological systems. They often find opportunities in academia, industry, and government labs, especially with skills in data analysis, modeling, and advanced laboratory techniques. Job growth is driven by ongoing advances in biomedical research and technology development.

How much does a PhD in biophysics make?

A PhD in biophysics typically earns between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Graduates often work in research, academia, or biotech companies, where advanced knowledge of biophysical techniques and data analysis are valued.

Job description

The Vollum Institute is a privately endowed research institute at Oregon Health & Science University dedicated to basic research that will lead to new treatments for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Vollum scientists have broad-ranging interests that coalesce around molecular neurobiology and cellular physiology. Their work has transformed the field of neuroscience and, in particular, have provided important advances in the study of synaptic transmission, neuronal development, neurotransmitter transporters, ion channels and the neurobiology of disease.

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics). The responsibilities are to conduct research exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission between neurons using electrophysiology and/or calcium imaging. The candidate will be involved in planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, circuit and live imaging approaches in the mammalian brain.

This position is full-time postdoctoral level (PhD in neuroscience or biophysics) in the von Gersdorff lab in the Vollum Institute.

  • Planning, executing, and analyzing experiments for independent research project(s) using electrophysiology, molecular, cellular, and live imaging and computational approaches in the retina and/or CNS.

  • Manuscript preparation for individual projects and assisting other lab members with manuscripts as needed.

  • Assisting the PI and other lab members with grant application (data acquisition, writing assistance, editing) as needed. Preparing fellowship applications.

  • Traveling to national and international meetings to present on findings.

  • Helping to mentor and train junior members of the laboratory.

  • Ph.D. in relevant field of study (Neuroscience and/or Biophysics or Computational Physics)
  • Direct experience in studies of neurons, synapses and/or brain circuits.
  • Knowledge and experience with computational and cellular techniques.
  • Experience with manuscript preparation and writing skills for individual projects and statistical analysis of data are required.

  • Direct experience in studies of neuronal imaging/morphology.
  • Imaging experience and work with live neurons and brain slices and analysis of patch clamp data.
