Job description

About Phase2
Our remote-first employees join and stay at Phase2 to be a force. In pursuit of digital experiences that advance the human experience, you will do your best work, live fully, and succeed as a team.
Phase2 is a digital agency passionate about customer experience, grounded in data and insights, and rooted in more than two decades of successful technology delivery. We guide industry-leading companies to what's next in their digital landscape.
And it all begins with finding the right people who align with our values and passion for impact.
About the Role
You will architect and build the data systems that power our clients' most important growth initiatives. You are first and foremost a builder, and you bring the credibility to lead technical conversations with clients directly. This role is built for someone who has spent their career as a hands-on data engineer and is ready to grow into a strategy-focused, client-facing position.
As a Marketing Technology Strategist on Phase2's Strategy team, you design and build the cloud warehouses, pipelines, CDP implementations, and platform integrations that connect raw data to real business outcomes: acquisition, lifecycle marketing, attribution, and audience activation. You're hands-on with the architecture and the code, and you're comfortable presenting technical strategy directly to client stakeholders and defending architecture decisions.
You understand how data quality, structure, and observability shape the analytics and AI outcomes clients rely on, and you bring that perspective to every engagement.
This position reports to: Director, Marketing Services
Who You Are
  • Engineer moving into strategy: You've built your career hands-on as a data engineer, and you're ready to grow into a strategy-focused, client-facing role. You can translate technical decisions into a business narrative and advise clients directly, not just build behind the scenes.
  • Systems thinker and builder: You design clean, scalable data architecture and you're hands-on, writing pipelines, modeling schemas, and debugging integrations yourself.
  • Technical range and adaptability: You are resourceful in unfamiliar client stacks. You ramp up quickly on new tools, data systems, and pipelines through hands-on exploration, AI assistance, and collaboration with subject-matter experts as needed.
  • Modern data stack fluency: You have hands-on production experience implementing cloud warehouses, Customer Data Platforms (CDPs), CRM and marketing automation tools, Reverse ETL, orchestration, and web analytics.
  • AI native mindset: You're comfortable building with AI in your day-to-day work, including agents, automations, AI-powered workflows, and data foundations for analytics and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) use cases. You use coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Codex) as a standard part of how you work.
  • Adaptable and collaborative: You move across client stacks, document your work, transfer knowledge cleanly, and work well with cross-functional teams. You're comfortable presenting technical strategy and architecture decisions directly to client stakeholders.

What You'll Do
  • Data architecture and modeling: Design data models, schemas, and identity strategies that connect raw data to clear business and marketing outcomes.
  • Pipelines and transformation: Build and maintain ETL and ELT pipelines and transformations into cloud warehouses using modern patterns and tooling.
  • Platform integrations: Integrate warehouses, CDPs, CRM and marketing systems, messaging platforms, analytics tools, and media data sources.
  • Activation and Reverse ETL: Configure audience, scoring, and lifecycle signal flows from warehouses into operational tools using Reverse ETL and activation patterns.
  • Attribution and measurement: Build attribution structures, UTM frameworks, and campaign tracking that give a trusted view of performance.
  • Data for AI and automation: Shape and prepare data for AI-powered use cases such as agents, automations, analytics assistants, and RAG-style workflows.
  • Quality, reliability, and enablement: Test, monitor, document, and improve data systems so they are reliable, scalable, and easy for clients to operate. Proactively identify and address technical debt.
  • Client collaboration: Work directly with client stakeholders to present the architecture, align on requirements, and clearly communicate technical decisions.
  • Practice development: Contribute reusable patterns and frameworks that strengthen Phase2's data engineering practice.

What You'll Need
  • Experience: 6+ years of hands-on data engineering experience in production environments, with a clear interest in growing from a builder role into strategy and client consulting, and 2+ years in an agency or consulting context working directly with clients.
  • Core technical skills: Strong proficiency in Python and SQL, with demonstrated experience building and operating production-grade pipelines and data models.
  • Cloud data and modeling experience: Hands-on experience with cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift), dbt or similar transformation tooling, data modeling, and tag management.
  • Pipeline and event systems experience: Proven experience with CDPs (e.g., Segment, mParticle) or event collection systems, orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Dagster), and building and operating production data pipelines.
  • MarTech and platform integrations: Experience integrating CRM, marketing automation, and messaging platforms (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce, Iterable, Braze) with warehouse and CDP data.
  • Activation and measurement knowledge: Hands-on experience with Reverse ETL (e.g., Census, Hightouch), web analytics, attribution, and marketing measurement.
  • AI and coding assistant fluency: Active daily use of coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Codex) and comfort building with AI tools, agents, and automations as part of everyday delivery.
  • Client communication: Comfort presenting technical architecture and decisions directly to client stakeholders, with prior agency or consulting experience strongly preferred.

What Success Looks Like
  • Reliable systems: Client data systems are reliable, scalable, and clearly documented.
  • Trusted outputs: Attribution, audience activation, and event tracking are live and trusted early in the engagement.
  • Trusted client partner: Clients see you as their technical leader on the engagement, the person they turn to for hard calls on architecture, scope, and risk.
  • Confident handoff: Clients can operate their environments with confidence after handoff.
  • Stronger practice: The Strategy team gains reusable patterns that make future data and AI-enabled engagements faster and stronger.

What You'll Get
  • The chance to make a real impact, helping millions of people per year.
  • To work from wherever you thrive best. We're a remote-first team built on trust, flexibility, and outcomes.
  • A competitive compensation package that considers various factors.
  • A comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability coverage, and supplemental insurance.
  • Our fun and interactive wellness program offers rewards for participation.
  • A 401(k) with a 3% employer contribution - no match required and 100% vested after just 90 days.
  • You'll start with 16 paid vacation days, 4 personal days, and 1 volunteer day each year. Vacation and personal time increase with your tenure, recognizing your continued contributions.
  • Up to 12 weeks of fully paid leave for birthing parents and up to 6 weeks of fully paid bonding leave, based on your tenure. This includes support for adoption and foster placement, along with the option to extend time off through additional unpaid leave.
  • Inclusive fertility, adoption, and surrogacy benefits through Kindbody, along with virtual health coaching and care navigation.
  • A $500 stipend to personalize and equip your home workspace for success.

What the Environment Looks Like
Physical Demands
  • Frequently remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Occasional adjusting or moving of light objects up to 20 pounds in all directions.
  • Continuous communication on live video chats, calls, and through emails and messaging platforms for the purpose of exchanging information.
  • Continuous repetitive movements that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Travel, sometimes frequent, is expected.

Mental Demands
  • Comprehension: Must continuously be able to understand direction and adhere to established procedures. Must also be able to gather information from clients and employees and synthesize this information in a meaningful way. May also be responsible for making improvements or recommendations to existing procedures.

  • Reasoning and Decision Making: Must continuously use logic to analyze and interpret information, and prioritize.
  • Communication: Must continuously express or exchange ideas and meaning with employees and clients.
