How much do pharmacist employment jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for pharmacist employment in the United States is $60.91, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $56.01 and $67.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is there a high demand for pharmacists?

Pharmacists are in high demand due to an aging population and increased focus on healthcare. Employment for pharmacists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations, with opportunities available in retail, hospitals, and clinics that require strong knowledge of medications and patient care. Certification and staying current with industry regulations can enhance job prospects.

What is the difference between Pharmacist Employment vs Pharmacy Technician Employment?

AspectPharmacist EmploymentPharmacy Technician Employment
Required CredentialsDoctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) licenseHigh school diploma or equivalent; certification may be required
Work EnvironmentHospitals, retail pharmacies, clinicsRetail pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities
Job ResponsibilitiesDispensing medications, patient counseling, clinical decisionsAssisting pharmacists, preparing prescriptions, inventory management

Pharmacist employment involves licensed professionals responsible for dispensing medications and providing patient care, requiring advanced education and certification. Pharmacy technicians support pharmacists with administrative and preparatory tasks, typically requiring less formal education. Both roles are essential in pharmacy settings but differ significantly in responsibilities and credentials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pharmacist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pharmacist, you need a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree, state licensure, and a strong grasp of pharmacology, drug interactions, and patient care. Familiarity with pharmacy management software, electronic health records (EHRs), and automated dispensing systems is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills help pharmacists effectively counsel patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. These competencies are crucial for ensuring medication safety, regulatory compliance, and optimal patient outcomes.

What other jobs can I do as a pharmacist?

Pharmacists can transition into roles such as pharmacy managers, pharmaceutical sales representatives, clinical pharmacists, or healthcare consultants. They often utilize their knowledge of medications, patient care, and regulatory requirements, and may need additional certifications for specialized positions.

What are the most common challenges pharmacists face when transitioning from retail to hospital pharmacy settings?

Pharmacists moving from retail to hospital environments often encounter challenges such as adapting to more complex medication regimens, working closely with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and managing a broader range of clinical responsibilities like medication reconciliation and dosing adjustments. Hospital settings require greater familiarity with electronic health records and protocols for sterile compounding. While the pace may be less customer-focused than retail, pharmacists must be comfortable making clinical interventions and collaborating directly with physicians and nurses to optimize patient care.

What does a pharmacist do?

Pharmacists are healthcare professionals responsible for dispensing prescription medications to patients, providing information about the safe use of those medications, and offering advice on general health topics. They review prescriptions for accuracy, check for potential drug interactions, and counsel patients on correct dosage and potential side effects. Pharmacists also work closely with doctors and other healthcare providers to ensure optimal patient care. In addition to working in retail pharmacies, they may also be employed in hospitals, clinics, or research settings.
