Petroleum Inspectors primarily focus on inspecting and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards in oil and gas facilities, while Oil and Gas Technicians support operational activities like equipment maintenance and production processes. Both roles require safety certifications and work in similar environments, but their core responsibilities differ, with inspectors emphasizing compliance and quality assurance, and technicians focusing on operational support.
As a petroleum inspector, your main duties are to analyze and measure a shipment of petroleum before delivering it to clients. When shipping vessels arrive at a port, you begin by verifying the correct quantity of petroleum and then continue by sampling the cargo from the tanks, which you send to a laboratory to be analyzed. If the analysis confirms that the cargo is to specifications, you can release it for distribution. If it is not to specification, you must make additional tests, reporting your findings to your client or supervisor.
The Coating Inspectors shall possess knowledge and skills relating to the application of protective coatings to pipelines, fabricated piping, and storage tanks. The inspector should be familiar with and have experience in applying protective coatings, operating lest equipment, monitoring the application of the coatings, and enforcing company, industry and manufacturers specifications. The inspector must be familiar with safety standards applicable to coating applications as set forth in OSHA Construction Industry Standards.
