How much do petroleum engineer rotation jobs pay per year?
What is the difference between Petroleum Engineer Rotation vs Reservoir Engineer?
| Aspect | Petroleum Engineer Rotation | Reservoir Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering or related field; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred | Bachelor's or Master's in Petroleum Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, or Geosciences; PE license optional |
| Work Environment | On-site at drilling sites, production facilities, and offshore platforms with rotational schedules | Office-based, analyzing subsurface data, reservoir modeling, and production optimization |
| Industry Usage | Common in oil and gas exploration and production companies, especially with rotational work programs | Primarily in reservoir management, simulation, and production planning within oil companies |
Petroleum Engineer Rotation and Reservoir Engineer roles share similar credentials and industry environments. However, Petroleum Engineer Rotation focuses on field operations with rotational schedules, while Reservoir Engineers concentrate on subsurface analysis and reservoir management. Both roles are vital in the oil and gas industry but serve different functions within exploration and production processes.

Job description
Summary
An engineer in training position providing support to Range Resources' Facilities Engineering team as they implement natural gas surface facility designs and solutions. This position will include exposure to all facets of the design, supply, installation, and support of wellsite gas production equipment. The student will be an active member of a technically diverse engineering team focused on the safe and responsible production of natural gas.
The Facilities Engineering Co-op position consists of two engineers alternating rotations each semester starting in the Spring of their Sophomore year (Ref: Pitt's Sophomore Start 3 & 4 Schedules - attached).
Each student will work within Range's Facility Engineering group consisting of five mechanical (2 PE's), two chemical, two electrical (1 PE), and one petroleum engineer.
Each Co-op student will be assigned a direct mentor responsible for the management and assignment of job tasks and projects.
Training, Work and Subject Progression examples:
1st Rotation: Drafting support (AutoCAD 2/3D), P&ID, Wellsite layout, Basic equipment specification, SCADA basics, Fluid Flow and Piping introduction, Project Management
2nd Rotation: Equipment selection and sizing, Safety Systems, Process Modelling (ProMax), Heater and Fired equipment, Wellhead Tree design, Piping Systems, Site Construction support, Asset Integrity, Welding design
3rd Rotation: Boiler and Pressure Vessel basics, Control Valves, Measurement, Instrumentation, Operational support, Emissions (wellsite combustion during Drilling and Completions, Production and Process equipment), Relief Systems, Wellsite Power, Dehydration, Compression
Engineering skills mentored and applied:
- Mechanical drafting and design (Autocad)
- Applicable engineering mathematics
- Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
- Flow of Fluids through valves, fittings, and pipe (Bernoulli's including compressible gas)
- Piping system design
- Pipe stress analysis
- Gas Conditioning and Processing
- Software based Process Modelling and Simulation (e.g. ProMax based)
- Control and Instrumentation systems (Remote Terminal Unit-RTU based controllers)
- Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) configuration and use
- Damage and Failure analysis (Fitness-For-Service based)
- Exposure to industry standard professional codes and practices
Currently enrolled in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or Petroleum engineering and entering their sophomore year.
Working conditions:Primarily an office-based position that includes site visits, as needed, to support the Engineering and Operations teams. Nominal 40-hour work week, Monday thru Friday.
