What do pet sitters do?

When pet owners leave town for work or vacation, they need someone to keep an eye on their furry friends. Pet sitters usually take care of household pets at the pet's home until its owner returns, though some pet sitters bring the animals to their own home for the duration of the job when allowed by the owner. Responsibilities include visiting the pet, replenishing food and water supplies, cleaning the pet's living space, and playing with it. The most common pets are dogs and cats. Dogs need to be walked for exercise, and cats need play time to release energy.

How much do pet sitters earn?

Pet sitters typically earn between $15 and $25 per hour, with rates varying based on location, experience, and services offered. Many pet sitters work independently or through agencies, and some may charge flat rates for specific services like overnight stays or multiple pets.

What are some common challenges faced by pet sitters and how can they be managed?

Pet sitters often encounter challenges such as managing pets with special needs, handling unpredictable behavior, and coordinating schedules with multiple clients. To address these, it's important to communicate clearly with pet owners about each pet's routines and requirements, stay organized with a reliable calendar, and be prepared for emergencies by knowing basic pet first aid. Building trust with both pets and their owners is key to a successful and rewarding experience in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pet sitter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pet Sitter, you need a solid understanding of animal care, basic first aid, and reliability, with experience or relevant pet care training being highly valuable. Familiarity with scheduling apps, pet monitoring devices, and sometimes pet CPR certification can enhance your service. Patience, trustworthiness, and strong communication skills help build rapport with both pets and their owners. These skills are essential to ensure the well-being of animals, maintain client trust, and manage responsibilities safely and efficiently.

What is a pet sitter?

Pet sitters are individuals hired to care for pets while their owners are away. Their duties typically include feeding, walking, playing with the pets, administering medication if needed, and sometimes performing basic household tasks like collecting mail. Pet sitters may visit the owner's home daily or stay overnight, providing companionship and ensuring the pets' well-being. This service helps minimize stress for pets by allowing them to remain in their familiar environment. Pet sitters often have experience with a variety of animals, including dogs, cats, birds, and small mammals.

Job description

Pet Care Technician — Paws Around Motown West Oakland County, Michigan • Full-Time • Open Availability • Starting Pay $14.50 - $15.50 per hour

Somewhere in Farmington, there's a golden retriever waiting by the window. In West Bloomfield, a senior cat needs her meds at noon. In Franklin, a rescue pup is learning to trust a leash again. And someone — maybe you — is supposed to be the person who shows up for them.

That's not a metaphor. That's the job.

Paws Around Motown is a professional mobile pet care company serving Oakland County. We're not a side hustle, a hobby, or an app. We are a structured, systems-driven team of pet care professionals who take this work as seriously as the families who trust us with their keys, their pets, and their peace of mind.

We're hiring a full-time Pet Care Technician to cover our west side route: Farmington, Southfield, West Bloomfield, Franklin, and Bloomfield Hills. This is the territory of long driveways, quiet streets, and clients who have been with us for years. The pace is steady. The relationships are deep. The work matters.

Here's what we're really saying: we are not looking for someone "trying this out." We are looking for someone who has been waiting their whole life for a job like this — and wants to grow in it.

WHAT THIS ROLE ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE

  • Dog walking, feeding, hydration, and medication administration in clients' homes
  • Snout-to-Tail Health Assessments at every visit — you are the early warning system for that family
  • Written client updates and photos through our CRM after every service
  • Calm, confident handling of pets of all breeds, sizes, and temperaments
  • Occasional overnight care, new client consultations, and light marketing tasks
  • Outdoor work in every Michigan season — including February

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

We're not hiring someone who "loves dogs." Plenty of people love dogs. We're hiring someone who:

  • Has open availability — mornings, midday, evenings, weekends, holidays
  • Wants a career in pet care, not a fill-in until something else comes along
  • Is dependable to the minute and detailed to the dot
  • Can be trusted with a key, a code, and a quiet house
  • Stays calm when a dog gets sick, a key sticks, or a thunderstorm rolls in
  • Communicates clearly before, during, and after every visit

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Real training, real systems, and real leadership
  • A defined growth path — Senior PCS, Team Leader, and beyond
  • Paid time off, paid holidays, and a culture that holds a standard
  • 401K
  • A team that has each other's backs — and yours
  • The chance to build a career around the work you've always wanted to do
