What is a personal training manager in training?

A Personal Training Manager In Training is an entry-level management position in the fitness industry, designed to prepare individuals to become Personal Training Managers. In this role, trainees learn how to lead a team of personal trainers, manage client relationships, oversee training programs, and handle administrative duties within a gym or fitness center. The position typically combines hands-on personal training with leadership training, helping candidates develop both their coaching skills and their management abilities. Successful completion of the training program often leads to promotion into a full Personal Training Manager role. This position is ideal for those who are passionate about fitness and aspire to lead and mentor others in a gym environment.

What are the typical responsibilities of a personal training manager in training?

As a Personal Training Manager In Training, your initial months typically involve shadowing experienced managers, learning operational procedures, and supporting the recruitment and onboarding of new trainers. You'll also assist with scheduling, client consultations, and performance tracking to ensure the personal training team meets its goals. This role often requires hands-on participation in both training sessions and administrative tasks, offering a comprehensive understanding of team management and business operations within a fitness facility.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal training manager in training?

To thrive as a Personal Training Manager In Training, you need a solid background in exercise science, fitness instruction, and leadership, often supported by a relevant degree and personal training certification such as NASM or ACE. Familiarity with gym management software, fitness assessment tools, and client scheduling systems is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal communication, motivational skills, and the ability to mentor team members help you excel in this role. These skills ensure you can effectively develop clients and trainers, drive gym performance, and foster a positive, results-oriented environment.

NOW HIRING: Future Business Leaders

Manager-in-Training | Paid Training Starting at $65K

Ready to turn your degree into a career?

SBM's Manager-in-Training program is a 9-week, paid leadership program designed for ambitious people who want to learn fast, take on real responsibility, and build a career in operations.

This isn't nine weeks of sitting in a classroom.

You'll be on-site, working with real teams, real clients, and real business challenges while learning directly from experienced leaders. From your first week, you'll be getting hands-on experience and building the skills you need to step into leadership.

The Experience You'll Gain

No two days are the same - and that's the point.

You'll get an inside look at what it actually takes to run a successful operation and have opportunities to:

  • Lead, coach, and develop team members

  • Work directly with Fortune 500 clients

  • Solve real day-to-day business challenges

  • Learn how budgets and operations work

  • Support safety and team performance

  • Build relationships with experienced site and operations leaders

  • Take what you learn and put it into action

You won't just be watching someone else lead. You'll be learning how to do it yourself.

Your 9-Week Head Start

Think of the MIT program as your jumpstart into management.

Week 1:Get immersed in the business, meet your team, and start learning how the operation works.

Week 3:Start putting what you've learned into action and taking on real challenges.

Week 9:Walk away with real operations experience, leadership skills, and a better understanding of where you want to take your career.

Throughout the program, you'll have experienced leaders and mentors around you who are invested in helping you grow.

Where Can This Take You?

The MIT program is just the beginning.

Graduates move into operations leadership opportunities across SBM's sites. Your next step will depend on your experience, strengths, location, and available opportunities - but the goal is to keep you moving forward.

Start here. Build your skills. See where your career can go.

Who We're Looking For:

You don't need years of experience. You don't need to already be a manager.

We're looking for someone who is ready to learn, lead, and take ownership.

You're curious and motivated. You ask good questions, build relationships quickly, and like figuring things out. You're comfortable in a fast-paced environment and aren't afraid to roll up your sleeves when there's a problem to solve.

Most importantly, you're looking for more than just your first job after college.

You want a career with momentum.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus
