What does a personal injury associate attorney do?

A Personal Injury Associate Attorney represents clients who have been injured due to accidents or negligence, such as car accidents, slip and falls, or medical malpractice. They handle legal tasks like investigating claims, negotiating with insurance companies, drafting legal documents, and advocating for clients in court. Their primary goal is to help clients obtain compensation for their injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Personal Injury Associate Attorneys work under the supervision of more senior attorneys within a law firm and may assist in trial preparation, legal research, and client meetings.

What are some of the most common challenges faced by personal injury associate attorneys in their daily work?

Personal Injury Associate Attorneys often face the challenge of managing a high caseload while ensuring each client receives attentive and thorough representation. Balancing the demands of case preparation, client communication, and court deadlines requires strong organizational skills and resilience. Additionally, they must be adept at negotiating settlements with insurance companies and opposing counsel. Working effectively as part of a legal team and collaborating with paralegals, investigators, and senior attorneys is also essential for success in this dynamic field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a personal injury associate attorney, and why are they important?

To excel as a Personal Injury Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, and a strong grasp of tort law, legal research, and litigation procedures. Familiarity with legal research platforms like Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and e-filing systems is typically required. Outstanding negotiation, analytical thinking, and client communication skills help attorneys stand out in advocating for clients and managing complex cases. These capabilities are vital for effectively representing injured clients, maximizing settlements, and ensuring compliance with legal standards.

Our team is passionate about securing justice and fair compensation for our clients, combining legal expertise with compassionate support. We pride ourselves on a collaborative, client-centered approach and a track record of success in complex cases.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to carry an active personal injury caseload and own the legal strategy on those files from evaluation through resolution. The ideal candidate will evaluate case value, approve settlement demands, negotiate directly with insurance carriers, and counsel clients at every decision point, supported by a full case management team that handles records, bills, and liens. Moorehead Legal resolves its personal injury matters pre-litigation; files that do not resolve pre-suit are referred to outside litigation counsel. This role demands sound legal judgment, strong negotiation skills, and a proactive mindset to drive cases toward successful resolutions. This is an on-site position in Pikesville, MD, with a target start date of September 2026.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate liability, damages, and case value on personal injury files, including auto accidents and slip and falls.
  • Set and adjust the legal strategy on each matter as the file develops.
  • Review and approve settlement demand packages before they are issued.
  • Negotiate directly with insurance adjusters to secure optimal pre-litigation settlements.
  • Counsel clients on offers, lien exposure, and net recovery, including difficult conversations.
  • Monitor statutes of limitations, provider liens, and case deadlines across the caseload.
  • Provide legal guidance to case managers and support staff, and keep files moving through each stage.
  • Identify files that will not resolve pre-suit and refer them to outside litigation counsel with a complete, well-documented file.
  • Maintain accurate, current documentation in Clio and practice in full compliance with the Maryland Rules of Professional Conduct.
Qualifications:
  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to the Maryland Bar and in good standing.
  • Minimum 4+ years of experience handling personal injury matters, including auto accident and slip and fall cases.
  • Proven experience evaluating case value and negotiating settlements directly with insurance carriers.
  • In-depth knowledge of personal injury claims processes, damages, medical terminology, and insurance practices.
  • Strong ability to review and analyze medical records and billing and to verify economic damages.
  • Proficiency in legal software (Clio, ProLaw, MyCase) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written/verbal communication and client interaction skills, with a professional and empathetic manner.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Workers' compensation experience.
  • Medical malpractice experience.
  • Experience with lien resolution (Medicare, Medicaid, ERISA, private health).
  • Bilingual abilities (Spanish/English).
Benefits:
  • $100.00 per hour, plus bonus opportunity.
  • Full-time, W-2 position (30+ hours per week).
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Generous paid time off and holidays.
  • Ongoing professional development and CLE opportunities.
  • A real caseload with real ownership, supported by a full case management team, and direct access to the Managing Attorney.

Moorehead Legal is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
