As an Interconnection and Permitting Specialist you will provide technical expertise and support during the development and construction of solar photovoltaic (PV), battery storage and electric vehicle charging station projects. The Interconnection and Permitting Specialist will work closely with operations and project development staff to efficiently and accurately move applications through the utility interconnection and permitting process nationally to support project mobilizations.

The Interconnection and Permitting Specialist possesses a strong technical aptitude and the communication and business acumen to translate Operations needs into technical guidelines.

Our Interconnection and Permitting Specialist’s contribute to the team by:

  • Prepare, submit, and track interconnection applications with utilities across various jurisdictions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with utility requirements.
  • Prepare, submit, and track permit application packages to AHJ’s ensuring accuracy and compliance with AHJ requirements
  • Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, project management, construction) and external stakeholders (utilities, AHJs) responding to questions or revision requests and facilitate timely interconnection approvals.
  • Coordinate with utilities during the review process by responding to technical questions, providing additional documentation, and facilitating the required utility witness testing and Permission to Operate (PTO) inspections and approvals in a timely manner.
  • Analyze and interpret utility interconnection standards, tariffs, and technical requirements to ensure project compliance. Address utility comments, requests for information, and technical concerns during the interconnection review process.
  • Maintain detailed records of interconnection status, timelines, deliverables, and anticipated approval date to allow mobilization and construction; provide regular updates to project teams and leadership.
  • Review and assist in preparing single-line diagrams, site plans, and other technical documents required for interconnection.
  • Manage multiple interconnection applications simultaneously and coordinate across departments and regions.
  • Establish and maintain points of contact and partnerships with utilities and AHJ’s.
  • Conduct site visits as needed.

The core components of success are (i.e. must haves):

  • 3+ years of work experience in Permits or Interconnection application submission for Solar or Construction of renewable energy systems.
  • Experience using Solar Design and Modeling Software – Preferred Helioscope, Energy ToolBase, and or PV Syst.
  • Understanding of state specific interconnections policies, such as Rule 21 (CA), ERCOT protocols (TX), Con Edison and NYSERDA guidelines (NY), ComED (IL), PSE&G and JCPL standards (NJ) and Eversource procedures (CT).
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, inverters (UL1741 SB compliance) and grid-tied configurations for commercial scale solar systems.
  • Familiar with PowerClerk, Salesforce and other utility specific portals for application submission and tracking
  • AutoCAD, Sketchup or similar image manipulation program skills
  • MS office, Excel, Visio and Word proficiency
  • Good technical skills relating to interconnection, inverters, racking, and overall system design for projects ranging from 25kW to 10MW.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with utilities, AHJs and internal team
  • A person with a high sense of urgency and a pro-active approach to problem solving
  • Valid Driver’s License- preferred Travel may include travel via employee’s automobile (reimbursed) or company rental car

Required Education or Certification:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Business or a related field. OR Bachelor’s in Distributed Energy/Generation.
  • Valid Driver’s License

The US base salary range for this full-time position is [$95,000-$115,000 + bonus + benefits]. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
