Enhance Your Engineering Career with Zachry Nuclear

Zachry Nuclear Engineering is seeking an experienced Engineer V - Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) to support nuclear power plant modernization, plant upgrades, and new plant projects.

As a senior technical contributor, you will provide leadership in the design, development, and implementation of I&C systems that improve plant safety, reliability, and performance. This position requires expertise in both legacy analog systems and modern digital control platforms, along with the ability to independently manage technical work and support project execution.

This role offers opportunities to lead complex engineering efforts, mentor developing engineers, and contribute to critical projects within the nuclear power industry.

This position may be based in one of the following locations:

  • Stonington, CT
  • Charlotte, NC
  • Williamsburg, VA
  • Perry, OH

Candidates may also be considered for remote work arrangements if they possess highly relevant experience and can successfully support client and project needs. Periodic travel to client sites and Zachry office locations may be required.

Education

One of the following is required:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET/EAC-accredited program plus 15 years of relevant hands-on engineering experience.

Applicable engineering disciplines include:

Required coursework: Analog and Digital Control Systems

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience with analog and/or digital control systems.
  • Experience leading technical work and engineering projects.

Preferred Qualifications

Industry Experience

  • Nuclear power plant engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of nuclear plant operations and procedures.
  • Experience with plant licensing and regulatory processes.
  • Hands-on field engineering experience supporting nuclear projects.

Technical Expertise

Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Instrumentation and Control (I&C) system design
  • Digital control systems
  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
  • Control system integration
  • Legacy control system modernization
  • Power generation systems
  • Nuclear industry codes and standards
  • NRC regulatory requirements

Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.

I&C Engineering & Design

  • Lead the design and implementation of instrumentation and control system modifications.
  • Develop engineering specifications, calculations, design criteria, and modification packages.
  • Define project scope, technical requirements, and design deliverables.
  • Design and evaluate control system architectures and functionality.
  • Select and specify instrumentation, control valves, and associated equipment.
  • Define plant control system interfaces and I/O requirements.
  • Support digital modernization projects and upgrades to legacy systems.

Technical Leadership

  • Provide engineering leadership on complex technical projects.
  • Independently apply engineering principles, industry standards, and design practices.
  • Solve complex technical issues and develop innovative engineering solutions.
  • Guide project teams through engineering evaluations and design decisions.

Project Execution

  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and quality objectives.
  • Coordinate activities with engineers, clients, vendors, and project stakeholders.
  • Support project planning, execution, and delivery.
  • Monitor project progress and proactively address risks and challenges.

Nuclear Compliance & Quality

  • Ensure designs meet applicable nuclear industry codes and standards.
  • Support compliance with NRC regulations and licensing requirements.
  • Participate in engineering reviews, design verification activities, and quality assurance processes.
  • Promote solutions that improve plant safety, operational performance, and reliability.

Mentorship & Collaboration

  • Review engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers.
  • Lead multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Collaborate with clients and internal engineering disciplines to achieve project objectives.

Field & Client Support

  • Perform plant walkdowns and field investigations.
  • Support installation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Interface directly with client representatives and plant personnel.
  • Travel periodically to customer sites and nuclear facilities.
