Commissioning Engineer – Material Handling Control Systems

Position Overview


We are seeking a Commissioning Engineer with extensive technical expertise across various automation systems—with a particular emphasis on PLC-based controls and HMI/SCADA solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for on-site commissioning and troubleshooting of warehouse and parcel conveyor systems, sortation systems, VFDs, network switches, and integrated control interfaces. Your proficiency in working with distributed I/O blocks, interpreting electrical schematics, tracking as-built changes, and resolving issues within complex sortation systems is essential to delivering seamless solutions to our customers.


Key Responsibilities


System Commissioning:


  • Commission and troubleshoot PLC-based material handling and conveyor control systems at customer sites.
  • Validate I/O, perform system testing, and fine-tune configurations for optimal performance.
  • Equipment Integration & Troubleshooting:
  • Commission and optimize Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to ensure precise motor control in automation applications.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial network switches to guarantee robust system connectivity.
  • Commission sortation systems to ensure proper sequencing and throughput optimization.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain distributed I/O blocks, ensuring reliable communication across system networks.


HMI/SCADA & PLC Expertise:


  • Commission and integrate HMI/SCADA solutions that provide real-time operational insights and control.
  • Demonstrate strong expertise in programming and troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLC systems (including ControlLogix and CompactLogix) and interfacing with HMI platforms, including FactoryTalk, Aveva Edge, Ignition, and legacy systems.
  • Electrical Schematics & System Diagnostics:
  • Read, interpret, and utilize electrical schematics to diagnose and resolve system issues quickly.
  • Track and document as-built changes to electrical schematics to ensure modifications during commissioning are precisely recorded and maintained.


Collaboration & Support:


  • Work closely with electrical and mechanical teams to ensure seamless automation system integration.
  • Provide technical support and training to operators and maintenance personnel.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex hardware, software, and networking issues while ensuring strict adherence to industry standards and safety regulations.


Travel:


  • Maintain a flexible schedule with extensive travel to customer locations across the nation for commissioning projects and system optimization support.


Qualifications & Skills

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis without employer visa sponsorship, now or in the future. This position is not eligible for sponsorship.


Educational Background:


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.


Technical Expertise:


  • Proven expertise in commissioning and troubleshooting PLC-based control systems, with in-depth knowledge of Rockwell Automation’s Allen-Bradley platforms (e.g., ControlLogix, CompactLogix).
  • Extensive experience with HMI/SCADA systems, including modern platforms such as FactoryTalk, Aveva Edge, and Ignition as well as legacy HMI interfaces.
  • Strong background in troubleshooting distributed I/O blocks, commissioning of VFDs, and industrial network switches.
  • Proven experience in commissioning sortation systems to maximize efficiency and throughput.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and track as-built changes for ongoing system maintenance.
