Job Description:
The Operations Research (OR) Analyst designs, develops, and deploys advanced optimization, mathematical programming, and analytics-based decision support systems across the organization. This role involves formulating and implementing moderately complex models and algorithms-including linear and mixed-integer optimization methods-to support large-scale operational decision-making. The OR Analyst develops, maintains, and enhances production-grade analytical solutions that drive cost optimization, resource allocation, pricing, acquisitions, and performance improvement throughout UPS operations.
The position requires close collaboration with business stakeholders, software engineers, and data teams to translate complex operational challenges into scalable quantitative models and robust software solutions. The OR Analyst is responsible for model validation, computational performance tuning, technical documentation, and full lifecycle support of analytical products. Responsibilities
- Formulate, develop, and implement mathematical optimization models, algorithms, and decision support tools to address business and operational problems
- Translate business requirements into quantitative modeling frameworks, including defining objectives, constraints, assumptions, and performance metrics
- Design, prototype, test, and deploy optimization-based solutions within production environments
- Analyze, validate, and calibrate models to ensure accuracy, robustness, and alignment with business objectives
- Evaluate alternative modeling approaches and solution methods to improve performance, scalability, and solution quality
- Collaborate with software development, data engineering, and business teams to integrate optimization models into enterprise systems
- Interpret and communicate analytical results to technical and non-technical stakeholders, providing actionable recommendations and insights
- Develop and maintain clear technical documentation for models, methodologies, and system implementations
- Monitor model performance in production and implement enhancements or corrections as business needs evolve
- Stay current with advances in operations research methodologies and apply appropriate techniques to UPS use cases
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Operations Research or a closely related field
- Experience in formulating and implementing mathematical optimization models
- Familiarity with commercial optimization solvers such as Gurobi and/or CPLEX
- Proficiency in object-oriented programming and development of production-quality analytical software
- Ability to clearly document optimization models, assumptions, methodologies, and solution approaches
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with advanced decomposition and solution techniques, including:
- Column generation
- Benders decomposition
- Dynamic programming
- Lagrangian relaxation
