What is permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is a procedure where pigments are implanted into the skin to enhance facial features such as eyebrows, eyeliner, and lips. It provides a long-lasting effect that mimics the appearance of traditional makeup, reducing the need for daily application. The results can last from one to several years, depending on factors like skin type, lifestyle, and how well the aftercare instructions are followed. Permanent makeup is performed by trained professionals using specialized equipment to ensure precision and safety.

What are jobs that work with permanent makeup?

As a permanent makeup artist, you might work with people who are interested in improving their look for aesthetic reasons, but you may also be able to help people who want to diminish the appearance of scars, birthmarks, or the effects of medical treatments. In this job, you implant pigment under the first layer of the skin via a technique similar to a tattoo. Beauty services that rely on permanent makeup include eyebrow shaping or permanent eyebrow application, lip shaping and coloring, and lash extension. You can also use permanent makeup to cover scars a client got in an accident or re-pigment skin with discoloration from a skin condition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a permanent makeup artist?

To thrive as a Permanent Makeup Artist, you need expertise in cosmetic tattooing techniques, color theory, sanitation practices, and often a state-approved certification or license. Familiarity with specialized tattoo machines, pigment brands, and sterilization equipment is typically required. Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to make clients feel comfortable are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are essential for ensuring client safety, achieving natural-looking results, and building a trustworthy reputation in the beauty industry.

What are some common challenges faced by permanent makeup artists in their daily work?

Permanent Makeup artists often face challenges such as managing client expectations, ensuring precise application, and maintaining strict hygiene standards. The role requires excellent communication skills to clearly explain procedures and aftercare to clients, as well as patience and attention to detail to achieve desired results. Additionally, artists must stay updated on the latest techniques and safety protocols to provide high-quality, safe services and build a loyal clientele.

Permanent Makeup and Microblading both involve cosmetic tattooing to enhance facial features. Permanent Makeup covers broader areas like lips and eyeliner, while Microblading specifically focuses on creating natural-looking eyebrows with hair-like strokes. Both require specialized training and licensing, and are performed in similar environments. Microblading is a subset of Permanent Makeup, making them closely related but distinct procedures.

How much can you make doing permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup artists typically earn between $30,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and client base. Skilled artists with certifications and a strong portfolio can charge higher rates per procedure, increasing their income potential.

What degree do you need to do a permanent makeup?

Permanent makeup artists typically do not need a specific degree but must complete specialized training and certification in cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation. Licensing requirements vary by location and often include completing a certified course and adhering to health and safety standards. Skills in color theory, skin anatomy, and the use of tattooing tools are essential for the profession.

Job description

ABOUT PREMIER PIGMENTS

Premier Pigments is a professional-grade PMU (permanent makeup) pigment manufacturer based in Highland Village, TX. We supply licensed PMU technicians, studio owners, and estheticians across the country — professionals who depend on consistent, high-quality pigments to build their businesses and serve their clients.

We're affiliated with the American Institute of Intradermal Cosmetics (AIIC), which has trained more than 15,000 PMU professionals. We operate out of a luxury salon suite community housing 22 independent beauty professionals, so you'll be working in a high-end professional environment every day.

THE ROLE

This is a B2B sales and account management position — not a consumer-facing retail role. Your customers are licensed beauty professionals: PMU technicians, permanent makeup artists, studio owners, and estheticians who purchase pigments and professional supplies.

You will be responsible for:
• Growing our professional account base by identifying and onboarding new B2B customers
• Managing ongoing relationships with existing accounts to drive reorders and retention
• Handling Shopify B2B order management and customer communications
• Converting inbound inquiries from prospective PMU trainees into enrolled students
• Supporting day-to-day operations of our salon suite community
• Representing Premier Pigments professionally across all communication channels

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

The right person for this role:
• Has 2+ years of B2B sales, professional sales, or account management experience (beauty industry is a plus, not required)
• Builds relationships with professionals, not just processes orders
• Pays close attention to detail in everything — written communication, order management, follow-up, data entry
• Is comfortable in a small, fast-moving owner-operated business where priorities sometimes shift
• Knows their way around Shopify or similar platforms, CRM tools, and basic spreadsheets
• Is genuinely curious about the PMU and professional beauty industry

This is NOT the right role if you:
• Are primarily interested in creative, design, or marketing production work
• Prefer large corporate environments with established process and clear-cut structure
• Are looking for a consumer-facing retail customer service position

COMPENSATION

Base salary: $42,000–$48,000 (based on experience)

Performance incentives (uncapped):
• $75–$150 per new B2B professional account acquired (tiered by monthly volume)
• $150–$250 per PMU trainee enrollment you close (tiered by monthly volume)
• 1.5%–4% commission on monthly reorder revenue above $2,500

On-target earnings: $55,000–$65,000+ in year one for a candidate hitting basic performance targets. There is no ceiling above OTE — your results determine your income.

PERKS & BENEFITS

• 30% employee discount on all Premier Pigments pigments, tools, and supplies
• Access to the professional PMU ecosystem — AIIC network, vendor relationships, industry events
• Luxury salon suite work environment
• First consideration for expanded responsibilities as the brand grows

HOW TO APPLY

Complete all screening questions — they are required to be considered. We pay close attention to how you write, not just what you say.
