Vertical Turning Lathe CNC Machinist – 2nd Shift

Location: Pooler, GA
Employment Type: Contract‐to‐Hire or Direct Hire

Compensation

  • $33.00–$38.00/hr during First Shift training
  • 10% shift differential once moved to Second Shift
  • $36.30–$41.80/hr on Second Shift

MONDAY-THURSDAY, 4 day work week!

Shift & Training Details

  • Standard schedule: 4‐day workweek, 10–12 hours/day, Monday–Thursday
  • All new hires begin on First Shift (6:00am–4:30pm) for approximately 90 days of training
  • Transition to Second Shift (4:00pm–2:30am) after training
  • Early transition available for highly experienced machinists
  • Conversions to permanent employment typically occur around the 90‐day mark

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled vertical turning lathe CNC machinist with strong experience operating large VTL equipment. This role involves machining large, high‐precision components used in heavy industrial applications. The ideal candidate has experience in heavy manufacturing or oil & gas, is confident working with oversized parts, and can read and understand CNC code (no programming required).

This position is perfect for a vertical turning lathe CNC machinist who is proactive, detail‐oriented, and committed to producing high‐quality work while maintaining a strong focus on safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate large CNC Vertical Turning Lathes
  • Machine large components to tight dimensional and geometric tolerances
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, and GD&T
  • Understand CNC code and standard machining commands
  • Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies
  • Optimize cutting parameters to improve quality, cycle time, and tool life
  • Perform in‐process and final inspections using precision measurement tools
  • Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues with minimal supervision
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to support first‐time‐right production
  • Maintain strict adherence to safety, quality, and housekeeping standards

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5–7+ years of CNC machining experience in heavy industrial manufacturing
  • Strong experience operating large VTL machines
  • Proven ability to machine large, tight‐tolerance components
  • Advanced blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation
  • Experience with alloy steels, carbon steels, stainless steels, and large forgings
  • Ability to read and understand CNC code (no programming required)
  • Strong problem‐solving skills and ability to work independently
  • Willingness to work Second Shift after training
