The Polo Community Unit School District #222 is looking for a permanent substitute teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. The Permanent Substitute Teacher is an integral, full-time member of our instructional team. Unlike traditional on-call substitutes, the Permanent Substitute reports to one of the school buildings every day. When a classroom teacher is absent, you will step in to lead instruction. On days when all classrooms are fully staffed, you will support the school community through co-teaching, small-group intervention, student mentoring, or administrative support.
This position offers the predictability of a consistent daily schedule and school environment, making you a familiar and trusted educator to our students.
Key Responsibilities
1. Classroom Instruction & Management
- Execute Lesson Plans: Deliver high-quality instruction based on the absent teacher's lesson plans across various grade levels and subject areas.
- Maintain Classroom Culture: Establish and maintain a positive, safe, and orderly learning environment. Apply the school's behavior management policies consistently.
- Adapt on the Fly: Modify teaching methods and materials to meet the diverse needs of students when an unexpected vacancy arises.
- Ensure Safety: Supervise students closely in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, and during recess or dismissal.
2. Building Support & Flexibility
- Provide Daily Versatility: Report to the main office each morning ready to accept that day's assignment, which may change based on emerging building needs.
- Support Student Intervention: When not filling a teacher absence, pull small groups of students for reading/math remediation or enrichment as directed by instructional coaches or administration.
- Assist Staff: Provide co-teaching support, assist with testing accommodations, or help with administrative tasks during periods without direct classroom coverage.
3. Professionalism & Communication
- Leave Detailed Reports: Provide clear, constructive written feedback for the returning classroom teacher regarding lesson progress and student behavior.
- Collaborate: Work closely with grade-level teams, special education staff, and school leadership to support student success.
- Maintain Confidentiality: Respect and maintain the confidentiality of student records and personal information.
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
- Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Certification: Valid State Substitute Teaching License or Teaching Certificate (or the ability to obtain one prior to start date).
- Flexibility: Exceptional adaptability and a willingness to teach different subjects and grade levels daily.
- Classroom Management: Strong ability to build quick rapport with students and manage classroom dynamics effectively.
Preferred:
- Experience working with children in a K-12 school setting, camp, or tutoring environment.
- Degree in Education or a related field.
- Familiarity with educational technology (e.g., Google Classroom, smartboards).
Position Details & Benefits
- Job Type: Full-time, Permanent (Following the academic school calendar)
- Hours: Monday - Friday, [Insert Hours, e.g., 7:45 AM - 3:30 PM]
- Compensation: $133.15 per day
- Benefits: Eligible for full district benefits, including medical/dental insurance, and enrollment in the state retirement system.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods throughout the school day.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally (classroom materials, books).
