Job description

Position Summary
The Automation Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, troubleshooting, and optimizing automated equipment and control systems. This position works closely with manufacturing, maintenance, electrical, mechanical, and engineering teams to improve production efficiency, quality, safety, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission automated manufacturing systems.
  • Develop and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, SCADA, and robotics applications.
  • Program and modify PLCs such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Mitsubishi.
  • Configure and troubleshoot industrial robots and automated equipment.
  • Develop electrical/control-system specifications and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and control-system problems.
  • Integrate sensors, motors, drives, vision systems, and other automation components.
  • Support installation, startup, commissioning, and validation of new equipment.
  • Improve machine cycle times, uptime, throughput, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Develop preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for automated systems.
  • Implement machine safety systems, including safety PLCs, interlocks, light curtains, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements.
  • Analyze equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Work with vendors and contractors on automation projects.
  • Train maintenance technicians and production personnel on automated equipment.
  • Maintain electrical schematics, PLC programs, software backups, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in continuous-improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
Common Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field; equivalent experience may be accepted.
  • Experience with PLC programming and industrial automation.
  • Knowledge of electrical controls and industrial networking.
  • Experience with robotics, HMIs, VFDs, servo systems, and sensors.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and control drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and machine-safety requirements.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
