Familiarity with version control systems like Git, experience with databases (such as MySQL or PostgreSQL), and knowledge of frameworks like Catalyst or Dancer are commonly required. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication help individuals excel in collaborative development environments. These skills ensure robust, maintainable code and smooth project delivery in technically demanding software engineering roles.

Job description

Join the Programming Foundations Team within Amazon Builder Experience as a Software Development Engineer. The Language Experience team in Builder Tools is the center of excellence for Amazon's use of programming languages, highly-leveraged shared software, and application build tools.
Our tools are used in all aspects of the business, and their care and evolution are of critical importance to the effectiveness of Amazon. We're looking for a deeply technical leader interested in sustaining and evolving the shared software platform used by nearly every service within the company. Those with experience evolving broadly distributed and highly complex software libraries, such as large open source projects and mission critical foundational software stacks will be given an opportunity to have company wide impact.
Key job responsibilities
You will design and build developer tools that Amazon engineers use every day. You will work with the languages and libraries that power Amazon's services, making them easier to use and more reliable. You will help maintain our build tools, compilers and package managers. You will work on our 3PSW repository mirrors. You will collaborate with engineers across Amazon to understand their pain points and build tools that address them. You will write code, review code from teammates, and help others debug issues with our tools.
A day in the life
Your work will directly affect how builders at Amazon do their jobs. We are a language expertise team at the heart of being able to compile and shift software. This is practical work that requires understanding what builders actually need and building tools that solve their problems without getting in the way.
About the team
The Programming Foundations Team is part of Amazon Builder Experience. We work on the basic tools and infrastructure that builders use to write software. Our team includes engineers who care about developer experience and want to make building software at Amazon easier. We do not own customer-facing products directly, but our work affects every team that builds software at Amazon. We focus on doing useful work rather than flashy projects. If you like building tools that help other engineers and want to work on problems that span the whole company, this team might be a good fit.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
