Job description

The Location Safety Trainer is responsible for selecting and train qualified School Bus Drivers according to APS's established guidelines and legal requirements. Recruit, and instruct Trainees through the successful completion of training and testing to the level of District Certified School Bus Driver. Recommend to the Location Safety Supervisor whether to hire certified school bus drivers. To provide on-going training and performance evaluations for all Driver employees. To assist management in administration of the location's entire safety program including industrial safety. Maintain the highest level of ethical behavior with our customers, fellow employees and community we serve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
An individual in this role must be able to perform the following functions with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Proactively recruiting individuals to become School Bus Drivers.
  • Instructing selected individuals through the successful completion of training and testing to the level of State Certified School Bus Driver; training School Bus Drivers according to district guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Conducting and documenting required behind-the-wheel training for School Bus Drivers.
  • Providing First Aid, Defensive Driving, Industrial Injury Prevention, and other company sponsored training programs as necessary.
  • Conducting and documenting semi-annual behind-the-wheel School Bus Driver evaluations.
  • Participating in the development/administration of customer safety awareness programs and company-sponsored safety programs.
  • Reviewing Driver records for violations and taking appropriate corrective action.
  • Coordinating with the Safety and Training Supervisor to notify Drivers of upcoming licenses and/or certificate expiration dates
  • Reviewing records and performing administrative safety duties as needed.
  • Investigating, reporting, and recording vehicle accidents, work-related injuries, and incidents.
  • Performing Driver Orientation in conjunction with Supervisors, Maintenance Supervisors, and/or the Location Manager.
  • Responding to personal injury and vehicle accidents, completing on-scene investigations, and preparing/submitting corresponding reports to the Student Transportation office.
  • Investigating customer service complaints relative to safety issues and taking corrective action.
  • Assisting management in the administration of the location's entire safety program, including monthly Safety Meetings and the Accident Review Committee.
  • Documenting and maintaining all training records as required by State and Federal regulations and Company policies.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Two years transportation industry experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and group presentation skills
  • Well-developed multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Compliance with state requirements
  • Proven ability to conduct all activities in accordance with the highest ethical standards
  • No preventable accidents in the past 12 months
  • Acceptable driving performance for the past 12 months
  • Bilingual preferred.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required, some college including education/training courses preferred
  • One or more years of training and/or safety experience required
  • New Mexico State PED School Bus Driver Instructor certificate preferred or obtained within 2 months.
  • Current Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake, Passenger, and School Bus Endorsement required
  • Appropriate vehicle class license, current medical and school bus driver's certificate
  • Commercial driving experience required
  • Innovative classroom training skills with working knowledge of adult training techniques.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and transportation related software
  • Strong leadership skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong commitment to providing excellent employee relations and customer service
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
