How much do perforating jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for perforating in Texas is $19.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.67 and $20.82 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in perforating roles?

One of the main challenges in perforating roles is maintaining strict safety standards due to the use of high-powered equipment and potentially hazardous materials, especially in oil and gas settings. Workers must consistently follow detailed procedures to ensure accuracy and prevent accidents, which requires a high level of focus and responsibility. Additionally, adapting to varying work environments—such as remote field locations, irregular hours, or changing project demands—can be demanding. Team collaboration and clear communication are crucial for overcoming these challenges and ensuring smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in perforating?

To excel in Perforating, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of industrial or oilfield processes, often gained through vocational training or on-the-job experience. Familiarity with perforating tools, machinery, safety protocols, and relevant industry certifications (such as HAZWOPER or specific equipment handling permits) is highly valuable. Effective teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to follow precise instructions are important soft skills for the role. These qualities help ensure safe, efficient operations and successful project completion in potentially hazardous environments.

What is a perforating?

A perforating job involves creating holes in well casing or tubing to establish a pathway for oil, gas, or other fluids to flow into the wellbore. This process is crucial in the oil and gas industry, as it enhances well productivity by connecting the reservoir to the well. Perforating is typically done using specialized tools like shaped charges, mechanical perforators, or laser technology. It requires precision and safety measures to ensure efficient and controlled perforations.

The position collaborates closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, manufacturing, testing, and field operations to deliver innovative solutions that enhance product performance and customer value.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and development activities for new downhole tools, product enhancements, and technology development programs.

• Establish project development plans and provide technical leadership throughout the product development lifecycle.

• Develop mechanical designs, engineering calculations, tolerance analyses, and functional specifications for complex engineering projects.

• Perform engineering analysis and troubleshoot complex mechanical design challenges using analytical and simulation tools.

• Develop product verification and validation plans, including laboratory testing, qualification testing, and field evaluations.

• Apply reliability engineering principles, statistical analysis, and risk assessment methodologies to improve product performance and durability.

• Lead engineering design reviews and ensure compliance with HSE, quality, and engineering standards.

• Collaborate with electrical, firmware, manufacturing, materials, testing, and field engineering teams to develop integrated product solutions.

• Support prototype development, manufacturing transition, and product commercialization activities.

• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on engineering methods, design tools, and development best practices.

  • Proven expertise in mechanical system design, analysis, and validation, preferably within downhole, high-pressure, or high-temperature environments.
  • Proficiency with CAD and simulation software (e.g., SolidWorks, ANSYS, or equivalent) and experience with mechanical testing instrumentation.
  • Strong understanding of reliability engineering, materials performance, and integrated system design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary projects, prioritize effectively, and deliver high-quality results on schedule.
  • Excellent technical communication, documentation, and presentation skills.
  • Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility is advantageous.
  • Preferred: Experience with plastic injection molding design and manufacturing methods is beneficial.
