Job description

ROLE:   GROUNDS WORKER
QUALIFICATIONS:           


  • High school diploma;
  • Experience in performing general manual work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Tennessee.


JOB GOAL:  Maintenance of athletic fields and landscaped areas.  Does related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Performance of semiskilled tasks of a physically demanding nature.
  • As work experience is gained, employees in this class may be assigned to somewhat more difficult and responsible tasks.
  • Operate various pieces of light automotive and mechanical equipment during a major portion of the time. The work normally is performed under close supervision; however, constant supervision is not always required for routine and repetitive tasks that can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding areas;
  • maintains, propagates, plants, cultivates, waters and sprays flowers, plants, shrubs and trees;
  • sows and mows grass; prunes and trims trees, shrubs and bushes;
  • rakes and collects leaves; sprays pesticides;
  • plants flowers; applies fertilizer;
  • edges sidewalks, borders and plant beds; trims weeds, grass and hedges;
  • operates mowers, tractors, dump truck and hand tools in performance of tasks;
  • assists in snow removal;
  • performs related tasks as required.

 
VOCATIONAL PREPARATION
The required vocational preparation may come from any of the following:
 



  • Thorough knowledge of the types and uses of tools and equipment used in landscaping, construction and maintenance work particularly as applied to specialized work to which assigned;
  • General mechanical ability and ability to perform semiskilled and technical tasks in landscape, construction and maintenance activities;
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.

  • Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.

CAPACITY AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:
 

  • Regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical work such as walking on rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 lbs.) items and occasionally very heavy (100 lbs. & over) items.
  • Operation of hand and power tools and the range of shop equipment to very exacting tolerances, calling for full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability in order to achieve full production to acceptable standards.
  • Color perception and discrimination;
  • Sound perception and discrimination;
  • Odor perception and discrimination;
  • Depth perception and discrimination;
  • Visual perception and discrimination; and
  • Oral communications ability.


WORK CONDITIONS:
May experience some discomfort due to exposure to odors, fumes, dust, and temperature.
