What is a perception job?

A Perception job typically involves developing and improving a system's ability to interpret and understand sensory data, often in fields like robotics, autonomous vehicles, and computer vision. Professionals in this role work with sensor fusion, machine learning, and computer vision algorithms to detect, track, and classify objects in an environment. Their goal is to enable machines to perceive and react to their surroundings accurately, enhancing safety and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a perception engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Engineer, you need strong foundations in computer vision, robotics, and sensor fusion, typically supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ROS, OpenCV, TensorFlow, and experience working with LiDAR, radar, or camera systems are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills are crucial for developing reliable perception systems that enable autonomous machines to interpret and interact safely with real-world environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in perception roles within autonomous vehicle development teams?

Professionals in perception roles often encounter challenges related to processing large volumes of sensor data, such as lidar, radar, and cameras, in real time to ensure accurate object detection and scene understanding. Balancing the need for high accuracy with the computational limitations of embedded systems can be demanding. Additionally, perception engineers frequently collaborate with teams in sensor fusion, mapping, and planning, requiring strong communication and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills. Adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and continuously improving algorithms to handle edge cases in complex environments are also key aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Perception vs Data Analyst?

AspectPerceptionData Analyst
Required CredentialsVaries; often no formal certification requiredBachelor's degree in statistics, data science, or related field; certifications like CAP or Microsoft Data Analyst
Work EnvironmentResearch, consulting, or strategic planning settingsBusiness, finance, healthcare, and tech industries
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in marketing, psychology, and strategic rolesCommon in corporate, finance, and tech sectors
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding how perceptions influence decisionsAnalyzing data to inform business strategies

Perception focuses on how individuals interpret and understand information, often in psychological or strategic contexts. Data Analysts interpret and analyze data sets to support business decisions. While perception is more subjective and qualitative, Data Analysts rely on quantitative data analysis. Both roles are essential in decision-making processes but serve different functions within organizations.

Job description

About us:

ย

MicroVision is at the forefront of driving the global adoption of innovative perception solutions, with the goal of making mobility and autonomy safer. Our engineering excellence, based in Washington State, Washington D.C., Hamburg, Germany and Orlando, Florida, enables us to develop and supply integrated lidar hardware and perception software solutions. Our proprietary technologies enhance safety and automation across various industrial applications, including robotics, automated warehouses, and agriculture, and are instrumental in the development of autonomous systems. MicroVision's core technology, initially developed for the automotive industry, continues to accelerate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Building on our history of providing technology to the military segment, our target offerings include semi- and fully autonomous airborne and terrestrial sensor systems. With our solid-state lidar technologies, encompassing FMCW and MEMS-based long-range lidar and flash-based short-range lidar, integrated with our onboard perception software, MicroVision possesses the expertise to deliver safe mobility at the speed of life.

To strengthen our team at the Orlando location, we are looking for a Staff Electrical Engineer. As a key member of MicroVision's Hardware Design Engineering team, you will collaborate with various technical teams in the company to design and take into production market defining Automotive LiDAR product.

ย  ย  Summary:

The Staff Electrical Engineer is responsible for supporting the full product development lifecycle of complex circuit boards for automotive LiDAR systems. This role contributes to the design, integration, validation, launch, and sustainment of electrical hardware, working closely with cross functional teams to deliver robust, high-performance products suitable for volume production. The ideal candidate brings strong technical depth in board level electrical design and hands-on problem solving across development and production phases.

ย  ย  ย  Your responsibilities:
  • Lead and support the design and development of circuit boards for automotive LiDAR products, from concept through production release
  • Drive board level architecture, schematic development, component selection, and design tradeoff analysis for mixed signal, power, control, and interface circuits
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, systems, optics, manufacturing, test, quality, and supply chain teams to ensure successful product integration
  • Support bring up, debug, integration, validation, and characterization of hardware in both laboratory and system level environments
  • Develop and execute test plans to verify performance, functionality, reliability, and design robustness
  • Investigate and resolve design, integration, manufacturing, and field issues through structured root cause analysis and corrective action
  • Support design for manufacturability, design for test, and design for reliability throughout the product lifecycle
  • Review PCB layouts to ensure proper implementation of electrical requirements, including power integrity, signal integrity, grounding, thermal considerations, and EMI mitigation
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation including design specifications, schematics, test reports, engineering change documentation, and release artifacts
  • Support product sustainment activities, including component changes, obsolescence management, supplier issues, yield improvement, and continuous product improvement
