What are perception jobs?

Perception jobs typically refer to roles within the fields of robotics, autonomous vehicles, and artificial intelligence that focus on enabling machines to interpret and understand sensory data from the environment. Professionals in perception roles develop algorithms and systems that process information from cameras, LiDAR, radar, and other sensors to help machines recognize objects, obstacles, and their surroundings. These positions are crucial for applications like self-driving cars, robotics, and advanced computer vision systems.

What is a Perception job?

A Perception job typically involves developing and improving a system's ability to interpret and understand sensory data, often in fields like robotics, autonomous vehicles, and computer vision. Professionals in this role work with sensor fusion, machine learning, and computer vision algorithms to detect, track, and classify objects in an environment. Their goal is to enable machines to perceive and react to their surroundings accurately, enhancing safety and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in perception roles within autonomous vehicle development teams?

Professionals in perception roles often encounter challenges related to processing large volumes of sensor data, such as lidar, radar, and cameras, in real time to ensure accurate object detection and scene understanding. Balancing the need for high accuracy with the computational limitations of embedded systems can be demanding. Additionally, perception engineers frequently collaborate with teams in sensor fusion, mapping, and planning, requiring strong communication and interdisciplinary problem-solving skills. Adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and continuously improving algorithms to handle edge cases in complex environments are also key aspects of the role.

What is the difference between Perception vs Data Analyst?

Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding how perceptions influence decisionsAnalyzing data to inform business strategies

Perception focuses on how individuals interpret and understand information, often in psychological or strategic contexts. Data Analysts interpret and analyze data sets to support business decisions. While perception is more subjective and qualitative, Data Analysts rely on quantitative data analysis. Both roles are essential in decision-making processes but serve different functions within organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Perception Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Perception Engineer, you need strong foundations in computer vision, robotics, and sensor fusion, typically supported by a degree in computer science, robotics, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like ROS, OpenCV, TensorFlow, and experience working with LiDAR, radar, or camera systems are highly valuable. Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and tackle complex technical challenges. These skills are crucial for developing reliable perception systems that enable autonomous machines to interpret and interact safely with real-world environments.

Job description

About us:

MicroVision is at the forefront of driving the global adoption of innovative perception solutions, with the goal of making mobility and autonomy safer. Our engineering excellence, based in Washington State, Washington D.C., Hamburg, Germany and Orlando, Florida, enables us to develop and supply integrated lidar hardware and perception software solutions. Our proprietary technologies enhance safety and automation across various industrial applications, including robotics, automated warehouses, and agriculture, and are instrumental in the development of autonomous systems. MicroVision's core technology, initially developed for the automotive industry, continues to accelerate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving. Building on our history of providing technology to the military segment, our target offerings include semi- and fully autonomous airborne and terrestrial sensor systems. With our solid-state lidar technologies, encompassing FMCW and MEMS-based long-range lidar and flash-based short-range lidar, integrated with our onboard perception software, MicroVision possesses the expertise to deliver safe mobility at the speed of life.

To strengthen our team at the Orlando location, we are looking for a Sr. Staff Electrical Engineer. As a key member of MicroVision's Hardware Design Engineering team, you will collaborate with various technical teams in the company to design and take into production market defining Automotive LiDAR product.

    Summary:

In this role you will be a technical leader responsible for driving the full product development lifecycle of highly complex circuit boards and subsystems for automotive LiDAR systems. This role owns critical electrical architecture decisions, leads complex technical efforts across multiple programs, and sets best practices for hardware development, validation, and sustainment.

The Staff Electrical Engineer is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, provide deep technical mentorship, proactively identify and mitigate risk, and serve as a go-to expert for board-level electrical design and system integration. This position works closely with cross-functional and external partners to ensure delivery of robust, scalable, and production-ready hardware solutions.

    Your responsibilities:
  • Lead the electrical architecture, design, and development of complex circuit boards and electrical subsystems for automotive LiDAR products from concept through production and sustainment
  • Own system-level and board-level design decisions, including partitioning, interfaces, power architecture, and tradeoff analysis across performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Serve as a technical authority for mixed-signal, power, control, and high-speed interface circuits
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple programs or product variants, ensuring consistency, reuse, and continuous improvement of electrical designs
  • Lead cross-functional technical discussions with mechanical, firmware, systems, optics, manufacturing, test, quality, and supply chain teams to drive successful product integration
  • Drive hardware bring-up, debugging, validation, and characterization at both board and system levels, including complex or ambiguous failure modes
  • Define, review, and approve comprehensive test strategies and validation plans to ensure performance, reliability, and compliance requirements are met
  • Lead structured root cause investigations for complex design, integration, manufacturing, and field issues; develop and drive corrective and preventive actions
  • Champion design for manufacturability (DFM), design for test (DFT), design for reliability (DFR), and cost optimization throughout the product lifecycle
  • Conduct and lead thorough schematic, design, and layout reviews, ensuring adherence to electrical best practices including SI/PI, EMI/ESD, grounding, and thermal considerations
  • Establish and maintain high-quality technical documentation, including design specifications, architectural descriptions, trade studies, test reports, and release artifacts
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Staff and Senior Engineers, raising the technical bar and promoting hardware development best practices
  • Support supplier and contract manufacturer engagement, including technical reviews, yield improvement initiatives, component selection strategy, and obsolescence management
  • Actively contribute to technical roadmap planning, risk assessment, and long-term platform strategy
  Our Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 12+ years of experience in electrical hardware development with deep expertise in board-level design and product development
  • Demonstrated success leading complex electrical designs through multiple product lifecycles, from early concept through high-volume production and sustainment
  • Expert-level experience with schematic capture, circuit analysis, component selection, and PCB development processes
