Classification Summary
Under close supervision, operates a variety of power and hand tools, and other small motorized pieces of machinery in a variety of public works construction and maintenance activities for the Village of Ruidoso. Non-exempt FLSA.
Job Title Summary
The Street Maintenance Workers performs a variety of street maintenance and construction tasks. This position also acts as a flag person in construction zones and guides heavy equipment operators in and out of construction zones and tight areas. This position will use a wide variety of hand tools along with motorized equipment tools.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions
  • Performs a variety of street maintenance and construction tasks, such as pothole repair, street cut repair, lay asphalt, sign installation and repair.
  • Flagging traffic, mowing and trimming roadways.
  • Washing and maintaining of equipment, snow shoveling, cleaning of ditches and culverts, shoveling, painting, and raking.
  • Works with construction tools such as air compressors, jack hammers, plate tampers, jumping jacks, tractor mowers, weed eater, and weed torches.
  • Assists backhoe operators by watching for hazards, and uses various hand tools such as drills, hammers, wrenches.
  • Cleans grounds, buildings and work areas.
  • Builds drainage structures, berms, installs culverts, and fills sand bags.
  • Maintains and cleans right-of-ways.
  • Assists in completing work orders.
  • Responsible for maintenance of assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Works with operators to learn the various functions of heavy equipment.
  • Assists with the operations of Hot Plant
  • Feeds hoppers for asphalt production.
  • Cleans Silo and Hot Mix Plant when producing Hot Mix
  • Assists Mechanic with Basic Oil Changes and minor welding
  • Maintains traffic control for various jobs in the Right of Way
  • Assists where needed for snow removal operations

Other Responsibilities or Job Requirements
  • Occasionally transports or operates equipment such as loaders, backhoes, trenchers, and other similar equipment.
  • Occasionally responds to inquiries from citizens.

Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • New Mexico Drivers License required
  • Knowledge of the policies, goals, and procedures of the Village of Ruidoso Street Department.
  • Ability to utilize construction tools such as shovels, tampers, jack hammers, wrenches, jumping jacks and compressors.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions, regulations, guidelines, and procedures orally and in writing.
  • Skill in communicating verbally, in writing, and by 2-way radio.
  • Ability to establish and maintain routine working relationships with citizens, contractors, community service workers, and employees.
  • Must be able to pass regular criminal history checks.
  • Must possess and maintain valid New Mexico motor vehicle operator's permit of appropriate classification and endorsement as required. Must agree to maintain a satisfactory MVR and minimum requirement of insurability as required by law. MVR background checks will be conducted by the Village.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Physical Demands
  • Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods of time, driving or riding in vehicles.
  • Frequent pushing, pulling, lifting and/or moving up to 50 +/- pounds.
  • Frequent squatting or bending required.
  • Frequent twisting and turning.
