What is a per diem optician?

A Per Diem Optician is an eye care professional who works on an as-needed basis, rather than holding a full-time or part-time permanent position. They fill in for regular staff members, often covering shifts during busy periods, vacations, or staff shortages. Per Diem Opticians perform all the typical duties of an optician, such as fitting eyeglasses, interpreting prescriptions, and assisting customers with frame selection. This flexible role allows opticians to work at multiple locations or for different employers, offering more control over their schedules.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a per diem optician?

To thrive as a Per Diem Optician, you need a solid understanding of optical dispensing, lens fitting, and frame selection, usually gained through formal opticianry education or certification. Familiarity with lensometers, optical lab equipment, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Strong interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and adaptability are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate prescriptions, high-quality customer service, and flexibility in meeting the needs of different practices.

How does scheduling and work flexibility typically operate for a per diem optician?

Per Diem Opticians usually enjoy a high degree of schedule flexibility, as they are employed on an as-needed basis to cover staff shortages, busy periods, or specific shifts. This means work hours may vary from week to week, and assignments can range from a single shift to several days at a time. While this flexibility is a significant advantage, it also requires adaptability and readiness to work in different environments, often with minimal notice. Effective communication with management and other optical staff is key to ensuring smooth transitions and quality patient care.
