What is a per diem offshore tankerman?

Per Diem Offshore Tankermen are specialized maritime professionals responsible for the safe transfer of liquid cargo, such as oil or chemicals, between vessels and offshore facilities. They work on a per diem basis, meaning they are paid daily rather than salaried, and are often hired for specific projects or assignments. Their duties include ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, connecting hoses, monitoring transfers, and conducting inspections. Per Diem Offshore Tankermen must hold specific certifications and demonstrate expertise in handling hazardous materials. Their role is critical in preventing spills and ensuring the safe operation of offshore transfer activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem offshore tankerman?

To thrive as a Per Diem Offshore Tankerman, you need comprehensive knowledge of marine cargo operations, hazardous material handling, and relevant safety regulations, typically supported by a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with Tankerman endorsement. Familiarity with cargo transfer systems, oil spill response equipment, and electronic logging tools is essential for the role. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are vital soft skills. These competencies ensure safe, efficient cargo transfers and compliance with maritime safety standards in challenging offshore environments.

What are the typical work schedules and living conditions for a per diem offshore tankerman?

Per Diem Offshore Tankermen often work on a rotational schedule, such as 14 days on followed by 14 days off, depending on the employer's needs and the specific project. While offshore, you can expect to live on the vessel or platform, sharing living quarters and facilities with other crew members. The work environment is highly safety-focused and structured, with strict adherence to protocols for transferring hazardous materials.
