Job description

Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician prepares and distributes medications, maintains drug inventory, and provides patient care under the direction of a Clinical Pharmacist.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Fills and delivers medication through ADC systems.
  • Answer and triage pharmacy phone calls and messages from hospital staff.
  • Communicates with the Clinical Pharmacist to provide precise information when distributing medications in a timely manner to the nursing units.
  • Completes monthly medication room, ADC, and outdate inspections.
  • Assists in restocking inventory.
  • Pre-packs bulk medications and compound ointments, creams and oral solutions.
  • Set up and refills crash cart trays.
  • Determines when IVs and minibags are due by reviewing MARs.
  • Prepares and delivers large volume intravenous mixtures, antibiotic minibags, and total parental nutrition solutions.
  • Restock supplies, solutions additives, and solutions.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning in compounding suites in accordance with policy.
  • Works in the ER to obtain med histories on patients being admitted to the hospital.
  • Adheres to JCAHO, USP 797, USP 800, and State regulations.
  • Assists in training new employees and ensures optimal pharmaceutical care is provided to patients.
  • Evaluate areas in need of improvement and provides input to improve current methods, services, programs or technology.
  • Performs all other related duties to support departmental goals.
Requirements
  • High School or GED Required.
  • Minimum 1 to 3 Years experience as a pharmacy technician.
  • Registered in the state of Rhode Island as a Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacist Limited.
  • National certification as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, hazardous materials and controlled substances and understanding of related practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of mathematics, pharmacology and quality control.
  • Ability to adjust priorities based upon understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
  • Good judgment and strong verbal communications, including strong phone skills.
  • Highly productive and quality focused.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others.
