Per Diem Clinical Abstractor information

What is a per diem clinical abstractor?

A Per Diem Clinical Abstractor is a healthcare professional who reviews and extracts specific medical data from patient records, typically on an as-needed or temporary basis. Their work helps to ensure accurate and complete clinical documentation for purposes such as quality reporting, research, or billing. Because the role is 'per diem,' these abstractors are usually scheduled based on workload demand rather than having a set, full-time schedule. They must be detail-oriented, have a good understanding of medical terminology, and often need experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a per diem clinical abstractor?

To thrive as a Per Diem Clinical Abstractor, you need a solid understanding of medical terminology, clinical documentation, and health information management, often supported by a degree in health sciences or a related field. Experience with electronic health records (EHR) systems, data abstraction software, and relevant certifications such as RHIT or RHIA are commonly required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong organizational skills help you accurately extract and interpret clinical data. These skills are essential for ensuring precise data collection, compliance with regulatory standards, and supporting quality improvement initiatives in healthcare.

What are the typical challenges faced by per diem clinical abstractors when managing multiple projects across different healthcare facilities?

Per Diem Clinical Abstractors often need to quickly adapt to varying documentation systems and processes at different healthcare facilities. Balancing multiple projects can be challenging, especially when each location has unique protocols or electronic health record (EHR) platforms. Effective time management and strong attention to detail are crucial to ensure accurate data abstraction within tight deadlines. Additionally, since per diem roles may involve working independently, clear communication with on-site staff and remote teams is essential for resolving documentation discrepancies and maintaining data quality.

What is the difference between Per Diem Clinical Abstractor vs Clinical Data Coordinator?

The abstractor typically works on a temporary basis focusing on data abstraction, while the coordinator manages broader data processes in a full-time capacity.
