What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Pediatric Interventional Radiologist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Pediatric Interventional Radiologist, you need extensive medical training including a medical degree, radiology residency, and specialized fellowship in pediatric interventional radiology, along with board certification. Expertise in advanced imaging modalities (such as ultrasound, CT, and MRI), image-guided procedures, and familiarity with specialized pediatric equipment is essential. Exceptional communication, problem-solving abilities, and a compassionate approach to working with children and their families are critical soft skills. These competencies are crucial to ensure safe, precise, and empathetic care for pediatric patients undergoing complex minimally invasive procedures.

What are some common challenges pediatric interventional radiologists face when working with young patients?

Pediatric interventional radiologists often encounter challenges such as adapting procedures to smaller anatomies, ensuring patient comfort, and communicating effectively with both children and their families. Procedures may need to be modified to accommodate age-specific considerations, and sedation or anesthesia is often required to minimize movement and anxiety. Additionally, close collaboration with pediatricians, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff is essential to provide holistic and safe care for young patients.

What is Pediatric Interventional Radiology?

Pediatric Interventional Radiology is a specialized field of medicine where minimally invasive, image-guided procedures are performed on infants, children, and adolescents. Using technologies like ultrasound, CT, and MRI, pediatric interventional radiologists treat a wide range of conditions, such as vascular malformations, tumors, and organ abnormalities, without the need for open surgery. These procedures often result in less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications compared to traditional surgery. The specialists work closely with pediatricians and other healthcare providers to offer tailored care for young patients.

What is the difference between Pediatric Interventional Radiology vs Pediatric Radiology?

AspectPediatric Interventional RadiologyPediatric Radiology

While both roles require specialized training in radiology, Pediatric Interventional Radiologists focus on performing minimally invasive procedures, whereas Pediatric Radiologists primarily interpret diagnostic images. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus within pediatric radiology specialties.

In response to our ongoing growth and commitment to the well-being of our faculty, we are seeking a full-time pediatric interventional radiologist to join the Section of Pediatric Interventional Radiology.

About the Section

Our team conducts over 7,500 image-guided procedures annually and is currently comprised of four dedicated pediatric interventional radiologists. We are supported by five advanced practice providers (APPs) and a Care Navigator, ensuring comprehensive care across inpatient and outpatient services. Our interventions encompass a wide range of procedures, including:

  • Vascular access
  • Treatment of vascular malformations
  • Hepatobiliary procedures
  • Enteral procedures
  • Musculoskeletal procedures
  • Angiography
  • Embolization
  • DVT/PE lysis

Additionally, we have a specialized pediatric neurointerventional radiologist on our team. Our section boasts a rich history of clinical excellence and is actively involved in teaching both internally and externally. We participate in various multispecialty programs, including a vascular anomalies clinic, and are part of several centers of excellence, such as the Heart Center and the Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders.

Facilities and Equipment

The interventional radiology department is equipped with:

  • Two Philips DSA rooms (one featuring biplane technology)
  • Dedicated ultrasound in each room
  • An IR-only pre-procedure area
  • A consult room
  • A minor procedures room for low-complexity interventions

We anticipate the addition of another biplane DSA room by 2027. Anesthesia services are provided by specialized pediatric anesthesiologists, and there is a strong collaborative environment among IR nurses, technologists, and physicians.

Division Overview

The Division of Radiology consists of 31 full-time radiologists, each subspecialized in Body, Neuro, and Interventional Radiology. We encourage participation in research, supported by a radiation physicist/imaging scientist and a dedicated research coordinator. Faculty members have the opportunity to hold appointments at the University of Arizona College of Medicine (Phoenix), Mayo Clinic, and Creighton University School of Medicine (Phoenix). Our active teaching and research program includes:

  • Three ACGME-accredited Pediatric Radiology fellowship positions
  • Two additional non-accredited fellow positions (Neuro and Pediatric Interventional Radiology)
  • Fellows, residents, and medical students from affiliated radiology programs
About Our Facility

Our main campus is a freestanding 533-bed Level 1 children's hospital, recognized as the largest pediatric facility in the Southwestern United States.

Minimum Qualifications
