Teaching
The Chief will be expected to participate as a preceptor in the Core Clerkship in Surgery and the clinical elective for medical students enrolled at The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. They will also be expected to participate in the teaching programs of the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, which includes residents in General Surgery and fellows in Pediatric Surgery - as well as interdisciplinary teaching programs with other Divisions and Departments within the hospital and the medical school. Participation would include curriculum development, teaching, mentoring and evaluation of medical students and trainees, as well as the educational and training programs for Advanced Practice Providers.
Research
Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in pursuing basic, translational, or clinical research programs pertaining to the field of pediatric surgery or any relevant specialty or discipline. They will be expected to establish, coordinate, and integrate national, regional, and institutional clinical research protocols at Rhode Island Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. They will also be expected to act as the Institution's Principal Investigator or mentor for collaborative and multicenter studies and research networks.
Patient Care
The Chief will oversee administration of and participate in the clinical aspects of the division, including the inpatient service and the outpatient clinics. Other clinical responsibilities will include performing procedures pertinent to pediatric surgery, pediatric trauma and critical care (including ECMO), and sharing and overseeing call coverage and consultative services.
Service Responsibilities
The Chief will be expected to provide administrative direction and oversight of both inpatient and outpatient processes, promote quality and effective clinical care, foster a culture of excellence in professionalism and interdisciplinary delivery of clinical services across all Pediatric Surgical and Procedural Subspecialties. They will lead the collaborative development of evidence-based programs and practices, establish clear processes to monitor performance of all Pediatric Surgical and Procedural subspecialties, and ensure accountability for performance measures and outcomes that reflect quality and financial standards. This includes acting as chair on relevant committees and workgroups, providing leadership, in collaboration with the Pediatrician-in-Chief and nursing and administrative leaders, for the day-to-day operations and the mission of the children's hospital, participation in institution-wide committees and initiatives, and involvement at the highest executive level in collaborative efforts between regional hospital partners.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements include board certification in general surgery and special qualifications in pediatric surgery with a strong clinical background in surgical diseases of infants, children and young adults, excellence in patient care and teaching, and commitment to scholarly participation in research and educational programs. Must meet requirements for academic appointment at the Associate Professor or Full Professor rank in the Clinician Scholar, Research Scholar or Teaching Scholar Track at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to include an established record of scholarly achievements and publications with a national or international reputation. Highly desirable attributes include evidence of leadership in pediatric surgery and any of its special areas, involvement in national or international committees and relevant professional societies, and a track record of an administrative role at a major medical institution.
