Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) - Apprentice I - participates in a structured, on-the-job learning experience designed to introduce and develop Patient Care Technician Fundamental Skills. Under the direct supervision of nursing staff or trained facilitators, the apprentice supports basic patient care activities while learning core PCT competencies through job shadowing, hands-on practice, and guided clinical experience. This role focuses on skill development, patient safety, and progressive competency attainment to support high-quality, safe patient care in accordance with Memorial Hermann standards and policies.Job Description
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Actively enrolled at HEAL High School. Must have completed their sophomore year and be at least 16 years old.
Licenses/Certifications: Certified in Basic Life Support within 90 days of employment. CPR certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Minimum of 32 hours of hospital-based learning prior to hire (approved summer infusion experiences count toward this requirement).
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Participates in supervised learning experiences to develop and demonstrate Patient Care Technician Fundamental Skills, including but not limited to patient safety, mobility support, vital signs, infection prevention, and basic patient hygiene, nutrition support, and equipment use.
  • Learns and practices fundamental patient care tasks through job shadowing, hands-on experience, and guided practice under the direction of nursing staff or trained facilitators.
  • Demonstrates progressive competency attainment by completing required role-based competencies and skills validations as outlined in the PCT Fundamental Skills framework.
  • Observes, reports, and appropriately escalates patient needs, concerns, and abnormal findings to licensed staff in accordance with training and scope.
  • Adheres to Memorial Hermann policies, safety standards, and age-appropriate scope limitations while performing assigned duties.
  • Actively engages in required training, coaching, and supervised learning experiences to support ongoing skill development.
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
  • Demonstrates commitment to caring for every member of our community by creating compassionate and personalized experiences. Models Memorial Hermann's service standards of providing safe, caring, personalized and efficient experiences to patients and our workforce.
  • Other duties as assigned.
