Job description

Penrose - St. Francis Health Services is a full-service, 712-bed acute care provider in Colorado Springs comprising Penrose Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and St. Francis Hospital - Interquest. Penrose Hospital serves as the anchor hospital of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services with 300-licensed beds and the ability to provide tertiary (high tech) medical-surgical services with an emphasis on elective and outpatient care. Established in 1890, Penrose Hospital has grown to become a major health treatment and referral center, specializing in cancer care, cardiac care, emergency trauma care and physical rehabilitation. It’s an incredible time to join us as we are a proud Magnet® Hospital with designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for superior quality in nursing care. With more than 300 days of annual sunshine, mild winters and easy-to-access recreational areas like Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods and some of Colorado’s top destination resorts, you will enjoy an incredible lifestyle while having the career you’ve always wanted.

As our Patient Care Technician, you will perform patient-related care tasks including direct care, bathing, oral care, and feeding, while assisting patients with activities of daily living under the supervision of a nurse. You will support the clinical team by assisting physicians and nurses with diagnostic tests, clinical procedures, and the retrieval and delivery of medications per unit standards. Additionally, you will document all interactions in the patient’s medical record and communicate patient needs or observed changes in condition to the supervising nurse or physician.

Everyday you will obtain and record patient vital signs, monitor and record daily intake and output, and collect specimens, including non-invasive body fluids and blood. You will also monitor and perform actions to decrease patient length of stay, which includes utilizing the computerized Bed Tracking System, performing timely designated discharge duties, and communicating discharge information to the appropriate staff.

To be successful in this role, you must be committed to providing high-quality, supervised support that ensures patient safety and comfort. You should possess the ability to accurately document clinical data, maintain strict adherence to hospital protocols regarding specimen collection and medication delivery, and collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure efficient patient flow and discharge processes.

  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, address physiological, psychosocial, and spiritual needs, and provide for patient safety and comfort at all times.
  • Monitor and record patient vital signs, weight, positioning, I&O, activity, blood glucose readings, and telemetry, ensuring all readings are recorded in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Document clinically relevant findings and interventions in the patient's record according to hospital protocols, reporting significant alterations in the patient's condition to the RN or physician.
  • Assist the nurse/physician during examinations, treatments, and procedures, including retrieving necessary equipment, supplies, and preparing patients for transport.
  • Collect laboratory specimens according to hospital protocol, maintaining the hospital standard of zero tolerance for mislabeled specimens.
  • Participate in accurate and informative nursing reports and perform general duties including inventory, documentation, clerical tasks, and light housekeeping.
