What is a PCB?

A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) job typically involves designing, assembling, testing, and troubleshooting circuit boards used in electronic devices. Professionals in this field may work as PCB designers, engineers, or technicians, handling schematic layouts, component placement, and manufacturing processes. They use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle to create functional and efficient designs. PCB jobs are essential in industries such as consumer electronics, aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications. Skills in electronics, soldering, and CAD tools are often required for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the PCB position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Designer, you need strong knowledge of electronic circuit theory, PCB layout principles, and proficiency in CAD software such as Altium Designer or Eagle, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Expertise in tools like OrCAD, IPC standards certifications, and familiarity with manufacturing processes are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with engineering teams and addressing design constraints. These abilities are crucial for producing high-performance, manufacturable PCB designs that meet both technical specifications and project deadlines.

What are some typical responsibilities of a PCB designer during a product development cycle?

As a PCB Designer, your primary responsibilities include interpreting circuit schematics, developing multilayer PCB layouts, and ensuring adherence to design and manufacturing standards. You’ll regularly collaborate with electrical engineers to optimize component placement and routing, and with manufacturing teams to address DFM (Design for Manufacturability) concerns. Testing and troubleshooting prototypes are also part of the role, and you’ll often update designs based on feedback or evolving requirements. This collaborative workflow helps ensure the final product is reliable, cost-effective, and ready for mass production.

Job description

At Abaco Systems, an AMETEK business, we design mission-critical embedded computing solutions that operate in some of the world's most demanding environments. Our products support military, aerospace, industrial and commercial applications where performance, reliability and ruggedisation are essential.

We are looking for an experienced PCB Design Engineer to join our engineering team and help develop next-generation high-performance electronic products.

This is an opportunity to work on complex, high-speed, multi-layer PCB designs using the latest technologies, collaborating closely with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and test engineers throughout the entire product development lifecycle.

If you enjoy solving challenging layout problems, working with advanced technologies, and seeing your designs deployed in real-world applications, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Be Doing:

As a PCB Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of complex printed circuit boards used in advanced embedded computing platforms.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing high-performance multilayer PCBs for aerospace, defence and industrial applications
  • Translating electrical and mechanical requirements into robust, manufacturable PCB layouts
  • Performing component placement, constraint definition, routing and design optimisation
  • Supporting signal integrity and power integrity considerations throughout the design process
  • Working closely with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing and test engineers to achieve optimum product performance
  • Participating in design reviews and contributing technical input to architecture and implementation decisions
  • Creating fabrication, assembly and manufacturing documentation
  • Supporting Design for Manufacture (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Test (DFT) activities
  • Ensuring designs meet quality, reliability and compliance requirements
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvement and engineering best practice

Technologies You'll Work With:

Our products incorporate a broad range of advanced technologies, including:

  • High-speed digital interfaces
    • DDR4 / DDR5
    • GDDR6
    • PCI Express Gen3 / Gen4
    • Gigabit Ethernet
  • HDI and sequential build PCB technologies
  • Complex multilayer architectures
  • High-speed signal routing and constraint-driven design

What We're Looking For:

We're interested in engineers who combine strong technical PCB design skills with a practical engineering mindset and a passion for delivering high-quality products.

Essential:

  • Extensive experience designing complex PCBs in a commercial engineering environment
  • Strong understanding of PCB design principles and best practices
  • Experience with high-speed digital design and layout techniques
  • Knowledge of PCB fabrication, assembly and test requirements
  • Familiarity with HDI technologies and multilayer PCB construction
  • Experience working within cross-functional engineering teams
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively

Preferred:

  • Experience using Siemens EDA Xpedition tools, including:
    • Xpedition Layout
    • Xpedition Designer
    • CES
    • EDM
    • Fablink
  • Experience supporting signal integrity and power integrity analysis
  • Experience working in aerospace, defence, embedded computing or other high-reliability industries

Qualifications:
