What does a pcb layout engineer do?

A PCB Layout Engineer designs and develops printed circuit board (PCB) layouts for electronic systems, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and manufacturability. They work with schematic diagrams, component placements, and routing to create efficient designs that meet electrical and mechanical requirements. Using software tools like Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Eagle, they optimize signal integrity, thermal management, and design rule compliance. PCB Layout Engineers collaborate with hardware engineers, manufacturers, and quality teams to refine designs before production. Their work is critical in industries like consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, and telecommunications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pcb layout engineer?

To thrive as a PCB Layout Engineer, you need a strong background in electronics engineering, PCB design principles, and circuit analysis, typically supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard PCB design tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, along with knowledge of IPC standards and design for manufacturability, is crucial. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are key soft skills that set candidates apart. These competencies are vital for ensuring reliable, manufacturable designs that meet project requirements and support seamless collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by pcb layout engineers, and how can I prepare for them?

PCB Layout Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing complex design constraints, ensuring signal integrity, meeting tight deadlines, and coordinating requirements from multiple stakeholders. Preparing for these challenges involves staying updated with the latest design tools, understanding manufacturing capabilities and standards, and developing strong troubleshooting abilities. Proactively communicating with electrical engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing teams can help address issues early in the design process. Being detail-oriented and adaptable will also enable you to handle evolving project requirements successfully.

Job description

Company Overview
At Skild AI, we are building the world's first general purpose robotic intelligence that is robust and adapts to unseen scenarios without failing. We believe massive scale through data-driven machine learning is the key to unlocking these capabilities for the widespread deployment of robots within society. Our team consists of individuals with varying levels of experience and backgrounds, from new graduates to domain experts. Relevant industry experience is important, but ultimately less so than your demonstrated abilities and attitude. We are looking for passionate individuals who are eager to explore uncharted waters and contribute to our innovative projects.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join Skild AI and help drive innovation in robotics technology. In this role, you'll design DC power systems, integrate sensors, and collaborate on advanced motor driver and power electronics. You'll play a key part in hardware design, testing, and system validation to ensure reliability and performance in cutting-edge robotics solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement DC power systems, including battery management systems, monitoring, and protection.
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to design and validate motor driver circuits and power electronics systems.
  • Integrate and fuse sensor data, including IMUs, encoders, hall sensors, and temperature sensors (PCB-level design).
  • Develop and test power/sensor electronics systems in collaboration with hardware and firmware teams.
  • Ensure system reliability through testing, validation, and debugging of hardware systems in the lab.
  • Document design processes and contribute to hardware best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or Mechatronics.
  • Hands-on experience with DC power systems, battery management, and power electronics.
  • Strong understanding of sensor integration, including IMUs, encoders, and hall sensors.
  • Familiarity with low-level communication protocols such as RS-485, CAN, and SPI.
  • Experience with hardware design, PCB layout, and debugging.
  • Proficiency in power electronics design, including motor drivers and circuit design.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to handle system-level challenges.

Base Salary Range
$100,000-$300,000 USD
