What is a pcb layout designer?

A PCB Layout Designer is responsible for designing the physical layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on electrical schematics and design requirements. They use specialized software to place components, route traces, and ensure signal integrity while following design rules and manufacturing constraints. Their role involves collaboration with engineers to optimize performance, minimize interference, and meet industry standards. PCB Layout Designers must also consider thermal management, mechanical constraints, and manufacturability for efficient production.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a pcb layout designer?

To excel as a PCB Layout Designer, you need a solid understanding of electronic circuit design, component placement, signal integrity, and manufacturing processes, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard EDA tools such as Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics, or Cadence Allegro, and familiarity with IPC standards, is commonly required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and strong problem-solving abilities help set top candidates apart. These skills are crucial for producing reliable and manufacturable printed circuit boards that meet project specifications and facilitate smooth collaboration across engineering teams.

What are some typical challenges pcb layout designers face in their daily work?

PCB Layout Designers often navigate challenges such as fitting complex circuits within limited board space, ensuring signal integrity, and complying with stringent industry or client-specific design standards. Managing design revisions, coordinating with electrical engineers and mechanical teams, and ensuring that designs are manufacturable can also present day-to-day hurdles. Clear communication and a thorough understanding of both electrical and mechanical constraints are essential to address these issues efficiently. Successfully overcoming these challenges ensures high-quality, cost-effective PCB designs and maintains smooth project timelines.

Electrical PCB Design Engineer

Sparx Engineering

Austin, TX • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Job description

WE ARE SEEKING an experienced Electrical Engineer with 5+ years of schematic and PCB design experience to help develop new products. We design hardware and software across many industries, including medical devices, industrial automation, oil & gas, consumer products, and aerospace.

Our designs encompass many aspects of electrical engineering. We are looking for experience in many of the following areas: high-speed digital, precision analog, RF, power, motor control, sensors, and low power electronics. As this is a very hands-on role, this position is NOT eligible for remote work.

You will be working in small teams with other highly skilled engineers and developers to create products and software services for our customers. You should have a proven track record of being able to pick up new tasks and tools and be multi-faceted in your skillset and interests. Expect to be constantly challenged as part of an organization that strives to push the technological envelope in delivering innovative solutions to customer problems.

Sparx is a casual and highly collaborative work environment. Our relatively small team helps us utilize the best of each player on different projects.

Job Responsibilities

  • Communicate with clients and project stakeholders
  • Provide practical electronic solutions that align with client budgets and business needs
  • Provide scope of work, timeline estimate, and level of effort assessments for potential clients
  • Develop electrical block diagrams and specifications that guide electrical engineers in component selection and schematic development
  • Review schematic and PCB designs from other electrical engineers, identifying potential issues and offering solutions aligned with customer needs
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in existing designs, including soldering and circuit analysis equipment, while mentoring other engineers through technical challenges
  • Independently create electrical designs, handling component selection, circuit simulation, schematic capture, and PCB layout
  • Collaborate with PCB fabrication and assembly houses to ensure the products meet customer quality expectations
  • Collaborate with software engineers to develop and test firmware

Requirements

This position requires a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering with significant focus in PCB design. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Experience interfacing with customers and vendors
  • Experience creating electrical specifications and electrical block diagrams for potential designs
  • Experience mentoring less experienced engineers
  • Experience with Altium for schematic capture and PCB layout
  • Expertise in creating and simulating numerous electronics circuits
  • Strong electronics troubleshooting experience
  • Proficient with precision analog, DC/DC converters, and high-speed designs
  • Basic firmware development skills (C/C++)
  • Excellent math skills
  • Experience designing products for ease of manufacturing
  • Soldering and reworking PCBs

At Sparx, we move quickly and work on a wide variety of projects. Our engineers are challenged daily and must be able to adapt. Given the diversity of our projects, we are more concerned with your work ethic and your fit than your experience in any specific technology. You will be dealing directly with clients to help them meet their needs in an efficient and predictable manner. You are not the type to sit on the sidelines waiting for someone to tell you what to do next.

We seek problem solvers, not problem finders, and we have a strong reputation to uphold. We hire slowly and we hire well. Every engineer here is someone the rest of the team trusts to own a problem end to end, so you get to focus your efforts on technical work. In this highly collaborative and engaging environment, you will have the opportunity to work with, and learn from, a talented group of individuals, being exposed to a vast array of different domains and expertise.

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
