How much do pcb layout design jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 8, 2026, the average yearly pay for pcb layout design in New York is $110,175.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $82,600.00 and $131,300.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB layout designer?

To thrive as a PCB Layout Designer, you need a strong understanding of electronic circuit design, signal integrity, and industry standards, often backed by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, as well as knowledge of IPC standards, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication with engineers and manufacturing teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate, reliable PCB designs that meet performance, manufacturability, and safety requirements.

What is a PCB layout designer?

PCB layout designers are professionals who create the physical design of printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in electronic devices. They translate electrical schematics into detailed layouts, specifying the placement of components and the routing of electrical connections. Their work ensures that the PCB meets electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing requirements, and they use specialized software like Altium Designer or Eagle. PCB layout designers collaborate with engineers to optimize performance, reliability, and manufacturability of electronic products.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB layout designers when collaborating with hardware engineers and manufacturers?

PCB Layout Designers often need to balance the electrical requirements set by hardware engineers with the practical constraints of manufacturing. This includes ensuring signal integrity while managing component placement and routing within tight board dimensions. Effective communication with hardware engineers is essential to clarify design intent and resolve conflicts, while collaboration with manufacturers helps ensure that the design is both producible and cost-effective. These challenges require strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a good understanding of both engineering and manufacturing processes.

What is the difference between Pcb Layout Design vs Pcb Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectPcb Layout DesignPcb Manufacturing Engineer

Job description

About the Role

The Principal Electrical Engineer will have demonstrated technical leadership across many technologies related to the design and debugging of cloud compute server systems and PCB boards, add‑on cards, front panels, and IO backplane products. This engineer will also be responsible for decision‑making related to specifications, design, BOM, PCB materials qualification, validation, and production support.

What You’ll Do
  • Take the lead in interfacing with cross‑functional teams to develop system‑level architectures and board‑level implementations from product early concept through production launch.
  • Prepare specifications, BOM, design, and schematic entry internally and supervise the design work of junior engineers and external suppliers.
  • Make decisions related to layout guidelines for PCBs and supervise layout engineers ensuring that all physical and electrical requirements are met.
  • Analyze the design with simulation tools and make calculations to verify its conformance to the design requirements.
  • Lead and mentor layout, system bring‑up, and debug teams.
  • Work with suppliers, contractors, and principal design engineers to ensure the product is developed on time with high quality.
  • Make decisions and specify production test methods and limits.
  • Drive the balance between cost, performance, quality, and schedule and supervise international and domestic engineering teams.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 12+ years of experience directly related to the design and debugging of computer‑related PCB boards.
  • Skilled in analog and digital design (10+ years, Masters preferred).
  • Skilled in high‑speed bus interface design.
  • Knowledge of high‑speed PCB layout design and ability to debug high‑speed designs and signal integrity issues.
  • Knowledge of power distribution techniques and x86 processor system architecture.
  • Ability to implement high‑speed serial buses (SAS/SATA, PCIe, USB) and/or high‑speed parallel buses (DDR2/3) and CPU front‑side bus.
  • Skilled in feature and cost trade‑off analysis.
  • Ability to create specifications and design guides.
  • Strong leadership, presentation, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Promotes cooperation and commitment within a team to achieve goals and deliverables.
Compensation
