What does a PCB layout design engineer do?

A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) Layout Design Engineer is responsible for designing the physical layout of circuit boards used in electronic devices. They translate circuit schematics into precise board layouts, ensuring that electrical connections, component placements, and board layers meet performance and manufacturing requirements. Their work involves using specialized CAD software, collaborating with electrical engineers, and adhering to industry standards to optimize functionality, reliability, and manufacturability of the boards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB layout design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Layout Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electronic circuit design, signal integrity, and industry standards, often supported by an engineering degree in electronics or a related field. Proficiency with CAD tools such as Altium Designer, OrCAD, or Mentor Graphics, and familiarity with IPC standards are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects. These competencies ensure reliable, manufacturable PCB designs that meet performance and compliance requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB layout design engineers during the product development cycle?

PCB Layout Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing tight space constraints while ensuring signal integrity, meeting stringent design and manufacturing guidelines, and quickly adapting to frequent changes in component selection or circuit requirements. Collaboration with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and manufacturing teams is essential to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability. Staying updated with evolving design tools and industry standards also plays a key role in overcoming these challenges and delivering reliable PCB layouts.

What is the difference between Pcb Layout Design Engineer vs Pcb Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectPcb Layout Design EngineerPcb Manufacturing Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning PCB layouts, component placement, and routingOverseeing PCB production processes, quality control, and manufacturing efficiency
Skills & CertificationsECAD tools, PCB design standards, electrical engineering knowledgeManufacturing processes, quality assurance, IPC standards
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, engineering offices, CAD softwareManufacturing plants, quality control labs
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, aerospace, automotiveElectronics manufacturing, contract manufacturers, OEMs

The Pcb Layout Design Engineer focuses on creating and optimizing PCB layouts using CAD tools, ensuring electrical performance and manufacturability. In contrast, the Pcb Manufacturing Engineer manages the production process, quality, and assembly of PCBs. Both roles are essential in the electronics industry but serve different stages of the product development cycle.

Job description

At Spaceium, we are building spacecraft systems designed to push the boundaries of what's possible in orbit. As an Electrical Engineer, you will own the design, testing, and integration of the electrical and electronic systems that power and control our spacecraft - from schematic and PCB through harnessing, bring-up, and mission integration, in high-stakes, resource-constrained environments.

Responsibilities
  • Design spacecraft avionics: schematic capture and PCB layout for power, control, and signal boards
  • Design and build wiring harnesses and manage electrical integration across subsystems
  • Bring up, test, and debug electronic boards and subsystems
  • Develop and run electrical tests - power, signal integrity, functional, and environmental
  • Design power systems (batteries, power distribution, regulation) and support EPS architecture
  • Own documentation: schematics, ICDs, test procedures, and reports for design reviews
  • Set up lab instrumentation and test equipment, and support hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, embedded software, and systems engineers
  • Support spacecraft integration, environmental testing, and anomaly resolution
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Solid foundation in circuit design, analysis, and electronics
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
  • Comfort with lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, DMMs)
  • Exposure to at least one programming language (Python, C, or C++)
What We're Looking For

We're building technology that hasn't been done before. Experience is helpful, but curiosity, drive, and the ability to learn quickly matter more. If you're excited about spacecraft, enjoy solving hard engineering problems, and want to help build something new, we encourage you to apply - whether you're early in your career or more experienced.

Preferred Skills
  • Creative problem solver with strong first-principles thinking, capable of assessing risk and making decisions with limited data.
  • Experience in a nimble, technical engineering role, with a scrappy, entrepreneurial approach to meeting tight time or budget constraints.
  • Hands-on experience building and testing real electronics - student design teams (rocketry, CubeSat, FSAE), research, or industry
  • Experience bringing up custom PCBs from bare board to working hardware
  • Familiarity with power electronics, motor drive, or spacecraft EPS
  • Experience with microcontrollers, sensors, and embedded integration
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces (RS422, I2C, SPI, CAN, Ethernet)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, collaborative team player, and detail-oriented with a focus on quality.
Additional Requirements
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical project and mission milestones.
  • This role requires a physical presence at the Ottawa facility.
Compensation
  • Salary: $75,000 - $110,000 CAD per year
  • Equity: 0.1% - 0.5%

If you're excited about shaping the future of space systems, we'd love to hear from you.

Please submit any projects that you have worked on.
