What is a PCB design engineer?

A printed circuit board design engineer oversees the creation of printed circuit boards (PCB) used in phones, computers, and most other electronic devices. As a PCB design engineer, your responsibilities include designing the layout of the unit to incorporate the appropriate components, making recommendations to improve existing designs, and overseeing the actual manufacturing of these products to ensure they meet industry and company standards. These boards are the backbone of modern-day electronics, acting as the central unit of anything that runs on a microchip or CPU. You must design the board in such a way that it meets the specific needs of each product. While there is no universal education requirement, most employers prefer at least an associate degree in an electronics or computer science related field. Most PCB design engineers work for computer hardware manufacturers, but some general tech companies have in-house design departments.

What are some common challenges faced by PCB design engineers during the product development cycle?

PCB Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as meeting tight deadlines while ensuring design accuracy, managing complex multilayer layouts, and adhering to strict manufacturing and regulatory standards. Collaborating effectively with hardware engineers, mechanical designers, and manufacturing teams is essential to balance design requirements and production constraints. Staying updated with evolving CAD tools and design-for-manufacturability practices also plays a significant role in ensuring successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a PCB design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a PCB Design Engineer, you need a solid background in electronics engineering, circuit design, and PCB layout principles, often backed by a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency with PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, or OrCAD, and familiarity with industry standards like IPC are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and ensure design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering reliable, manufacturable, and high-performance electronic products.

What is the difference between Pcb Design Engineer vs Electronics Engineer?

AspectPcb Design EngineerElectronics Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning printed circuit boards (PCBs)Designing electronic circuits and systems
Skills & CertificationsPCB design software, schematic capture, IPC standardsCircuit theory, component selection, simulation tools
Work EnvironmentElectronics manufacturing, PCB layout firms, R&D labsElectronics product development, engineering firms, R&D labs

While both roles involve electronics, a Pcb Design Engineer specializes in creating the physical layout of PCBs, focusing on manufacturability and design standards. An Electronics Engineer designs electronic circuits and systems, often overseeing the entire electronic product development process. Both roles require a strong understanding of electronics, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ significantly.

Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate and advance faster than ever.

PCB Layout Designer

Our vision is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life for all. Micron Technology is a world leader in innovating memory and storage solutions that accelerate the transformation of information into intelligence, inspiring the world to learn, communicate, and advance faster than ever. At Micron, our commitment to people, innovation, tenacity, collaboration, and customer focus helps us deliver leading-edge solutions and create meaningful career opportunities. This is an on-site role based in Boise, Idaho.

Are you a highly skilled PCB layout designer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and turning requirements into manufacturable hardware? We are looking for an experienced Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Layout Designer to join our team and lead the detailed physical layout of complex, high-speed PCBs. In this role, you will be responsible not only for board layout, but also for the critical pre-engineering work required before layout can begin, including requirements definition, stackup planning, component placement strategy, design rule development, and cross-functional coordination with engineering teams. Cadence Allegro is the primary design platform used to develop our state-of-the-art PCB designs, and this position plays a key role in delivering products with exceptional signal integrity, power delivery, manufacturability, and quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the PCB design process from initial requirements and pre-layout planning through physical layout, design review, release, fabrication, and assembly support.
  • Perform pre-engineering activities required before layout begins, including requirements capture, constraint development, board stackup definition, floor-planning, placement strategy, and coordination of design inputs.
  • Create detailed physical layouts for complex, high-speed PCBs with a strong emphasis on signal integrity, power integrity, manufacturability, and reliability.
  • Demonstrate AI (Artificial Intelligence) proficiency by effectively using approved AI tools to enhance productivity, improve work quality, and drive continuous process improvement while adhering to responsible AI and data governance practices.
  • Partner closely with product engineering, signal integrity, mechanical, manufacturing, and other cross-functional teams to develop robust PCB solutions.
  • Develop and apply PCB design rules, standards, and best practices that support Micron's advanced engineering needs.
  • Evaluate existing PCB designs, identify improvement opportunities, and implement enhancements that improve quality, performance, and efficiency.
  • Prepare and verify fabrication and assembly deliverables, support release documentation, and collaborate with internal and external partners throughout the build process.
  • Manage multiple design requests and changing priorities while maintaining schedule commitments and design quality.
  • Serve as a technical resource for innovative PCB layout solutions and contribute to continuous improvement of design methodologies and workflows.
Required Qualifications
  • Extensive experience in PCB layout design, including ownership of complex board designs from concept through release.
  • Strong command of PCB manufacturing processes, fabrication requirements, assembly considerations, and design-for-manufacturability principles.
  • Deep understanding of high-speed PCB design principles, signal integrity constraints, and power distribution network design techniques.
  • Proficiency with Cadence Allegro PCB design tools.
  • Experience performing front-end or pre-engineering tasks such as stackup planning, constraint definition, floor-planning, and design rule development.
  • Ability to solve complex technical problems and work effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines.
  • A positive, team-oriented, can-do attitude and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Completion of signal integrity coursework, certifications, or industry training.
  • Familiarity with industry standards related to PCB layout, documentation, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience with high-density, high-speed, or advanced memory-related PCB designs is a plus.
  • CID or CID+ certification preferred.
Education

Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
