Purpose
The Certified Phlebotomist (PBT) holds direct accountability for the accurate, safe, and efficient collection of blood and non-blood specimens from inpatient and outpatient populations. Acting as a front-line ambassador of the laboratory, this professional ensures absolute data integrity through meticulous patient identification, precise venipuncture techniques, and immediate specimen transport. By performing vital technical and clerical inputs within Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), this role directly supports medical technologists and pathologists in delivering accurate, timely diagnostic insights for patient treatment.
Responsibilities
- Specimen Procurement: Perform precise venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick procedures across diverse patient demographics, adhering strictly to mandated two-form patient identification protocols.
- Arterial Punctures: Execute advanced arterial punctures as required, following rigorous post-collection stabilization and pressure guidelines.
- Patient Instruction & Non-Blood Collection: Instruct patients on proper self-collection procedures for non-blood laboratory specimens, ensuring sample viability and proper containment.
- Logistics & Transport: Securely transport specimens from both on-site departments and designated off-site collection areas to the central processing laboratory using established biosafety and temperature control protocols.
- Data Entry & LIS Management: Access Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) to accurately log patient demographic variables, enter physician test orders, track sample receipts, and manage billing edits (canceling, charging, or crediting tests).
- Compliance & Infection Control: Adhere to all institutional policies, quality assurance guidelines, strict hand hygiene techniques, and proper isolation precautions to maintain a safe, sterile environment.
- Customer Service & Communication: Manage inbound telephone inquiries and interact with patients, clinical providers, and laboratory staff with high professionalism. Alert technical supervisors or pathologists to any unusual or problematic incidents.
- Inventory Control: Monitor, restock, and maintain blood-drawing trays, carts, and outpatient station supplies, utilizing materials and reagents in a cost-effective manner.
- Training & Mentorship: Assist with the onboarding, training, and operational orientation of newly hired laboratory employees, phlebotomy students, and medical residents as assigned.
Minimum Essential Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Technical Experience: Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is required.
- Hands-on Experience: Minimum of six (6) months of active, post-training phlebotomy experience is required.
- Clinical Knowledge Base: Foundational knowledge of medical terminology and hands-on familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) is required.
- Technical & Physical Aptitude: Strong manual dexterity, high attention to detail, and sound independent judgment when prioritizing urgent (STAT) draw requests versus routine rounds.
- Interpersonal Excellence: Exceptional communication skills and a compassionate, reassuring bedside manner to ease patient anxiety during collection procedures.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
- Phlebotomy Technician (PBT-ASCP), Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT-NHA), or equivalent national credential is required.
